What happened to the equipment in Galt’s lab in his apartment when the goons forced open the door?

The book says, “...an odd, grayish-white dust.”

Then the Atlantis powerhouse statement of “Don’t try to force a mind” was mentioned; I realize the same principal applied here.

But WTF - everything just turned to dust?

The book was almost believable except for that.

Some self-destruct system.

Although for clarification you have no problem with the motor, but the fail-safe is your concern?

I don't recall them explaining in detail how the motor functioned, but I do believe a motor as they did describe it is more believable than some kinda "turn the room to dust" apparatus.

But yeah, that had some WTF elements, as did Reardon steel and the visual device hiding the valley.

Edit:

Slow grammar death...

If you remember at the Gulch, that Galt explained to Dagny what would happen if someone did not properly use the pass code.  He explained in great detail of the self destruct mechanism, it was the same one in his laboratory at his apartment.  I'm sure it didn't all turn to dust, but it was all destroyed.

Somehow I missed the "in great detail" part.

I'll go re-read it.

There isn't any detail on it, like 4 oz of C4 and 2 mil-spec detonators.  But he did discuss a self destruct mechanism.

OK - thought maybe I had skipped a page or something.

Here’s all that’s mentioned about a destructive mechanism:  “If you tried to break to break it down by means of the best explosives in the world, the machinery inside would collapse into rubble long before the door would give way.” pg. 732

Offshot of Galt's static electricity gathering widget involving magnets and shit.

No matter how you try to explain it the motor was > perpetual motion; impossible. There are a billion ways to destroy a lab.

I figured it incinerated everything, didn't it also talk about how while they were trying to break down the door they heard air rushing into the room?

From the book:  "...they heard a faint russle behind the door, no louder than the sigh of a weary mind."  pg 1096
