My first thread: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=1054022

When my father taught me to drive, he made sure to give me solid lessons about dealing with bigger, heavier vehicles on the road: give them a lot of clearance and take into consideration that it takes them longer to stop than it does a car. Roger that. I don't cut immediately in front of them and I even blink my lights to let them change lanes in front of me when they're going close to the same speed I am. I don't get so close behind them that they can't see me in their mirrors. This is more for my safety than theirs, but it's all the same out on the roads.

Why then does it seem like tractor trailer drivers just don't give two wet fucks about anyone else out there on the road with them? It's fine to swerve right out in front of me when I'm approaching from the rear at 10 or 15mph faster than you are, and then you fuck the dog taking your time getting past whoever you're trying to pass? I have recently spent a good deal of time on I-40 between Knoxville and Nashville, and have noticed that this is common, not the exception to the rule. Tractor trailers pay more in road taxes than cars do, so treat it like your personal domain, and fuck anyone who doesn't like it? Using "scummy fucking cunt of a road hog" as the standard setting for driving manners only makes reasonable men like myself decide to cut less and less of a break for tractor trailers as time goes by.

What do they teach on this subject in CDL courses these days, if anything at all?

Most trucks are governed and can barely pass eachother.

I drove over 1300 miles over the 4th of July weekend and I have to say that the truckers I saw were some of the best behaved I've ever seen.  Luck of the draw I guess.

If they want to pass, they should use the same judgment every other driver does: Is it safe to do so? Will I cause anyone to have to slam on their brakes when I change lanes? Am I moving fast enough so as not to completely fuck traffic when I do so?

See my post?

Also not everyone treats them nice, they get tired of it and cut people off because most won't let them over.

Most truck drivers are good drivers.

A lot of car drivers have no clue wtf they are doing.
Some truckers suck and some car drivers know whats going on...BUT
Logic says the odds are in a conflict the truckers is doing his job and the car driver couldnt get a fucking clue from Vanna White.
A Marine doing a thread cuz the mean truck driver wasnt nice?

ETA- After reading the other link, it seems you guys are really having repeated bad luck on the freeway. Perhaps State Routes would be a safer course for you and your family.

If you're not moving fast enough so as not to completely snarl traffic when you change lanes, you're not ready to pass. It's that simple.

If you cut me off to prove a point about how people are mean to you, don't be surprised when people make it a point to cut you less and less slack as time goes by.

if they wait for every car that's coming up on them, they'll never get to pass.

It's not a question of nice or not. I don't expect the world to be nice to me.

A little common fucking courtesy ––such as that which I extend to others–– wouldn't be a bad start, though.

Ha!

Watch out for the damned city buses! That's right, pay no attention to the lines on the road they don't mean shit, feel free to drive 2 foot into my lane and scrape the fucking mirror, it's not your car anyway. Taxes pay for all that shit anyway. I swear half of them just got their learner's permit that afternoon.

This ain't no armchair quarterbacking on this one, I drove a 44 foot bus for a while in college. Fuckers. If you can't drive, get the fuck out and walk!

And only 12% of their fucking operating budget comes from passenger fares. The fucking rest comes from fucking taxes. More damned bullshit I'm tired of paying and yet, I have to be annoyed by it on a daily basis.

Two threads in two weeks about how bad the truck drivers are?

CavVet CSI has two theories...

1) There is a a deranged stalker trucker out to get you and your family, I would advise stay off the Interstates...

2) You guys are not the best of drivers, again, stay off the Interstates.

Seriously, if this happened to us, this frequent, I would stick to state routes before someone gets killed.

How the truckers behave is closely linked to the enforcement of the traffic laws on trucks in any particular state.  As an example, I was on I 40 in one state, the truckers were driving like maniacs, extremely fast and extremely recklessly, I crossed into another state....all of a sudden the same trucks that had recently passed me were driving exactly the speed limit and were behaving completely in the manner they should.  The difference was simple, the first state was letting trucks do just about anything they wanted, enforcement against large trucks was non existent, the second state was cracking down on the truckers, the difference was like night and day!

I dont give a fuck how people act towards me, if they've got a poor attitude, fuck'em.

BUT, If its one thing that gets me pissed right the fuck off - Is asshole drivers. Semi trucks or not, if you dont know the rules of the road, get a fucking bike.

I make very effort to be courteous to truckers on the highway.  They've got a job to do, and there are plenty of times when they want to pass and passenger vehicles won't let them.  I don't blame them for taking an opportunity to pass - even if it's at the expense of a passenger vehicle that would also like to pass - because most passenger vehicles will screw them out of a passing opportunity of they get the chance.

I truck for a living and I am in a 62 mph governed truck. I happen upon folks who wont do 55, let alone the speed limit quite often . Now according to some of you since I cannot do 65 mph. I  should just sit behind people like this for the rest of the day if I am not presented with the optimal opportunity to pass, that's simply  not gonna happen! I try to not jump in front of traffic . However if I need to get over and traffic wont let me over, then I will start crowding to my left to get someone to let me in.
I do not enjoy acting like a bully and I always try to be courteous to my fellow motorist, perhaps I am the exception to the rule.
If I need to get over and cars wont let me over and there is a cop with someone pulled over some states will ticket you if you do not get into the left lane. Most states have a move over or slow down law for emergency vehicles and law enforcement. Tennessee Has a move over law there is no slow down provision and I have been warned by Tennessee state troopers, but the a holes chose to ignore my turn signal and I could not get over. so whats a guy to do.
Not all truckers are a holes there are lots of us who give our fellow truckers shit on the radio for being dicks to other motorist I have called in  on drivers who have tailgated cars unmercifully before and Ill do it again .
Why I am at it whats with all the motorist who cut a truck off to make the next exit, instead of getting behind the truck, doing so takes what a couple of seconds more, but instead the motorist has to be a dick and indanger not only the trucker but everyone around as well. but I see people do that to each other all of the time. It does take a while longer for the trucker to stop that you just cut off so dont be surprised when you end up with a truck in the ass of your car
If you want respect you have to give it, it works both ways!

Back when I was going to college I was driving up the icy highway late for class and of course slid off the road into the side ditch.  (Keep in mind this was before cell phones).  After it became apparent I was stuck fast I got out and stood by the rear of my car which was sticking out toward the road,  Car after car just passed by, then a logging truck comes along, pulls over just behind my car, and the driver gets out and asks me if I need to be pulled out.  Yeah dude, thanks!  So he gets out his long chain, hooks up to my underframe (crawling around on his back in the snow and ice), then gets in his rig and pulls me out while he is backing up along the shoulder.  I help him unhook the chain and ask him if he wants any money for his time and effort (I had like three bucks in my wallet!).  Says nope, gotta run, take care.  So he takes off down the road while I clean up some of the strewn items in my car, then notice that the trucker has turned around at the cross road ahead and is heading back my direction.  Turns out he was heading in the opposite direction in the first place and must have seen me slide off, so turned around at his next available turn around spot and came back to help me out!

Nope, you'll never hear me say anything negative about truckers.

This +1

I'm not a trucker but I pull a very large and heavy horse trailer and I operate like most of the truckers do when I am doing it.  I roll behind them in the right lane most of the time.   If I get stuck behind some dipstick in a Fiesta doing 55 in a 65 though (in my lane) I guarantee I'll wait for my opportunity to pass and take it. My truck is not underpowered or governed but if I see you in my mirror  hanging right off my left tail (and have been there for even a little while) on the cell phone in the express lane, I may have little sympathy for you.  And I may go for it to make it up the next hill with some momentum (and pass the dipstick Fiesta in the meantime). You'll just have to wait your turn.

Car drivers should all know that that left lane is there for one reason only. Don't just sit in it...make your pass and don't slow down the guy on the right that you just passed (especially a big rig) and you'll be ok most of the time.

There are assholes in every profession, trucking is no exception. For those of you who hate trucks/truckers, ask the market to start recieveing air drops. It'll free the road up!

Oh, wait a minute, then shit would cost ten times what it does now. I guess those trucks do serve a purpose. They get your groceries to market quickly and efficiently and give those who do it very little in return

I have no problem with most of them.  I used to pull a boat in a convoy of 8-10 trucks, trailers, and boats, and they would often make room for us in traffic, and call us up on the radio and have some good conversations.

That being said, I can't stand the douches who feel the need to tailgate the fuck out of me when I'm in the right lane doing the speed limit.

keep doing that and the other good drivers on the road, regardless of what they are driving will do the same.  an asshole will always be an asshole and they can get a CDL just as easily as anybody else can.
