Ok, the Sonic thread got me thinking.

If you order food from a restaurant, let's use Olive Garden as an example.

You call your order in, drive up there and park, gonto the bar and ask for your food.

Do you tip? The bartender is the one who gives you your food. But it's bagged already and he just turns around and gets it then rings you up. He didn't do anything extra.

So do you or don't you?

My sister-in-law works at OG and hates it when people order take out and don't tip...apparently everyone at her resturant expects it. I don't tip when ordering take-out and I'm far from Mr. Pink.

Poll up.

I don't tip if I'm just ordering out and I'm picking it up.

Yes, I tip.

Not as much as delivery.

Tip money goes in the gas tank. Truck's gotta eat too, especially if I'm driving to get my order.

You've never tended bar, huh?

No offense, but you're talking out of your ass.

In most cases, the bartender took your order, left the bar to put it all together, bagged it all up, then rang you up. He also "tipped out" a percentage of the cost of your order. If you don't tip him, he just paid to take care of you.

Good work there, champ.

I tip.  I part time bartend and we tip out the cook.  If it's a carry out order, we give the cook all the tip so I guess I hope other places would do the same.

I figure the restaurant has enough in the cost of the food to cover expenses, including that of the cook, so no I don't tip when I pick up. I do tip on delivery, which I rarely order, and when having a sit down at a restaurant, I'll typically go 20% for good service.

No, generally the drivers don't see any of that.  The 'delivery fee' money goes towards reimbursing the driver for gas and other delivery-related expenses.  I've never seen a place charge more than $1.50 or so for delivery and, if you don't tip, you're just screwing over the delivery driver.  The restaurant still gets their money.

And, on the OP's topic, unless it's a large takeout order where the bartender has obviously spent a bit of time away from the bar to assemble everything, I don't tip.

My family orders out regularly from about 4 restaurants.  I always tip about 10% at those places, and I have noticed significantly better results.  Better and more attentive service, larger portions, and friendlier folks.  And they always get my order right after I started tipping.

Aside from the regular places, it really depends on how they treat me.  Friendly, quick, asking if I want extra sauces, etc. = tip.

The point is that they are working and most likely not getting paid minimum wage for it.  For instance, most tipped restaurant employees in DC are paid $2.77/hr by their employers.

Two dollars and seventy-seven cents.  An hour.

That doesn't cover taxes on your tips or the cost of any employer-provided benefits.  Most tipped restaurant employees receive a heft bill from the IRS come tax time.

This is why you tip when you go out.

That being said, most takeout food is bagged by someone in the kitchen, so I'm generally still not tipping for that.

**** all that! I'm very sorry the government taxes their tips, that's ****** up. That ain't my fault. It would seem to me that waitresses are one of the many groups the government ****s in the *** on a regular basis. Look, if you show me a piece of paper that says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it, put it to a vote, I'll vote for it, but what I won't do is play ball. And this non-college bullshit you're givin' me, I got two words for that: learn to ******* type, 'cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent you're in for a big ******* surprise.

I might throw a buck into a tip jar, same as when I walk into a pizza place and order a slice and walk out with it.

But I see no reason to tip for service when there was no service beyond taking my money.

I tip generously when I dine in, though.

Tips are part of a servers wage.... if they spend more thatn 30 seconds tending to your meal, and are attentive to your requests... they usually get a nice tip.  If they spend all their time at the waitress station gossiping... they get a single penny face down.

Those who have waited tables know exactly what that means....

I do, but there is no legitimate reason to do so in my mind, I just do it.
