i'm looking at 2 trucks to buy for a light duty work truck.

one is a 88 ranger xlt 4cyl 5 speed manul
the other 84 ranger 6cyl auto.

both are the same price and in about the same conditon.

any opinions?

mike

ps this will be a hauling trash to the dump and going to the range truck. no towing or heavy hauling.

Either one is no better than the other.

But before you get either have the Emmissions checked out, throughly, they can cost you thousands if they are hosed, and those years are the worst, that was, imo, the biggest problem. personally I like the 4 banger.

good luck

Depends on if you want to be shift less or not.  Also, do you feel like you might need the bigger engine?

Def go with the 6 cyl. Had one loved it and the 4 just does not have the power.

i would go for the 84, it might even survive the emp of a nearby (but not too close) nuke.

I think the 4's a little light for that chassis. It's a fine toot around town/run to the dump truk, but I wouldn't haul wood etc with the 4. 'Course that isn't really the point of having a Ranger anyway.

At that age 84 v. 88 is not important. A better maintained 84 beats a less well kept up 88.

It will not survive an EMP tho.

But don't worry, you've got an AR so you can steal a truck that does run from someone else at gunpoint [:D]

All things being equal (mileage, available maintenance records, age of pervious owner, body, blah, blah, blah) I'd get the 6cyl automatic if it'll pass the emissions test.

Did you know that (Like the Escort) they're both made by Mazda? OK Ford owns 33.4 percent of Mazda,,,, so I guess there's a little "Ford" in them.
Anyway, they're surprisingly rugged little bastages! I know a LOT of people who use 'em HARD, & still love the things. They all seem to be able to hit 150-k + with no problem, no matter how they're treated.

I have a 89 4 cyn that I bought new. It has 151K miles on it and keeps on going. I did get stuck on the boat ramp once with it though. I pull the boat with a F250 powerstroke now. But for moderate duty the ranger is hard to beat. John

Myself, I would check to see the condition of the two vehicles.  I would opt for the 4 cly, you won't really notice much of a difference in performance (my friend owns a V6 98 Ranger, I have a 4 cly 2000 Ranger) unless you try to race people and my friend's V6 Ranger gets 16 - 18 miles to the gallon and I get 22 - 24 miles to the gallon.  With the conflict in the Middle East going on, it's a matter of time till the gas prices go up.

well after looking into them i went with the 4 banger. The 6 with the auto trans sucked ass! the 4cyl had more power. As far as emmisions go bama has no restrictions. it's got a straight through glass pack on it now.

I got it home and run great. Only problem is the headlights are out. Gotts take it back tomorrow for them to fix. i figure it'll make a good range/garbage truck. now if i can just get an ar airbrushed on it somehow.

Give it to the wife as her vehicle.  That ought to be fun. [:D]

If the 84 has, and it should, a 2.8L V-6 get it check over good, it was the rangers least reliable engine. I got a 2.9L that started in 86 i think in my 90 STX 4x4 and it has 250K+ now with its 4th owner! The 2.9L are great engines!
