It's 3:30 and I'm awake with chronic disheartening back pain (L4-5, L5-S1 bulge/herniation). If I didn't know what it was, I'd be in the ER. Nothing on hand but aspirin (taken), tylenol (taken), Biofreeze liniment (marinated in it), TENS unit (broken), and wine (don't drink).

Just griping! How's your holiday ?

Ouch! That hits me where I live. My kids are grown now, but I can remember being really poor when they were young, and trying to work around it. One year, my kid was supposed to take 6 boiled eggs to daycare for Easter. We had no money to get gas for the stove. I bought a dozen eggs and a roll of aluminum foil, and was able to figure out how to make roasted eggs in the charcoal grill so they were indistinguishable from boiled eggs while I still had 6 left to send with him.

That was almost better than having money. I can tell you though that my offspring have absolutely no recollection of being broke, which we were until the little one was about 12, and the big one 16. As far as they are concerned, they had the greatest childhood in history. That says a lot about their characters, and about the malleability of children in general, as well as the ability of a father to do right by his kids with or without money.

Sounds like it's time for the morph or the Fentanyl patches. Both suck but it'll knock the spike down to manageable levels, to bad the Doc is off tomorrow. Hit the ER right now if your wife can get you in the car and ask for a 175mg Demerol shot, They'll probably accommodate you. Good luck there.

Liquid Advil did a better job than Dilaudid when I had my troubles.

ETA; Ask for the new 5% lidoderm patches good stuff. Damn bro wish I could do something to help, Try to hang tuff, try the heating pad, heat was my friend.

If you have herniation, COLD PACKS may be the answer.

Or try alternating hot/cold.

Sorry you are in pain.

ETA I don't have the herniation you mention but do have back pain. I have gotten some relief by exercising with one of those big flabby exercise balls.

Try to rig something up that looks like it: a roll of blankets & pillows for example.
Again, I hope something works for you. Pain sucks.

Back pain sufferer here.....I've had some issues in the past, a few surgeries to correct them, and although no major problem for almost 15 years now, I still get pretty damn sore on occasion. I cant offer any real solutions....I  use a heating pad once in a while but when my back is really acting up there is no position I can lay in or sit in that provides any comfort at all. Chronic pain sucks.

One thing that did help.....saw a physical therapist who provided a lot of help with my ergonomics.
I though I knew enough already but I was wrong...simple things like better shoes and better stretches do make a difference.

Good luck....I can imagine what you are going through.

L5-S1 bulge/herniation here also. I had such pain down my left leg that I had trouble even walking or standing. I know how depressing that feeling is. It has been six months since my last injection in my back. I have been relatively pain free for those six months. I hope you start feeling better FLAL1A.

A tub full of hot water used to help me, I guess it worked like muscle relaxers. Be careful with that though, don't do something that would cause inflamation. Hope you feel better.

WOW. That is friggin awesome.
The things you can figure out with low or no funds is incredible.
If you had the money at the time, you would have never tried to find out it worked.

I doubt that his children would agree with you.

And it sound like their character is better than most kids of the well-to-do.

It sucks that the vast majority of people I know in pain can't get something for it.  When my wife broke her hip, it took hours before they finally gave her a little something for the pain before finally refusing to give her anything else.  While we were in the ER, I saw several junkies get pain pills.  The last time I was in the ER, I took an employee that had kidney stones.  They wouldn't give him anything for the pain.  The doctors take care of their regular customers while honest people that only seek them when absolutely necessary get screwed.z

God gave them to us; we were never on any kind of relief; we were well-off before they left home.

ETA: Thanks for all the responses. My wife woke up about 7:30 and found some kind of super-duper NSAID horse pills that have taken the edge off. Now, do I try to stay awake till bedtime tonight?

You roll into the ER and ask straight out for a shot of Demerol, right down to the dosage they are probably going to laugh you back to your car.  Welcome to the age of the drug seeker.  A lot of Doc's (specifically ER ones) can be pretty stingy with the good stuff because way to many people are just out for a high.

Pretty damn sad, as legit people often have to go without because the idiots ruin it for all of us.  Though, in my experience the Doc's are usually pretty decent at sorting out the riff raff.

I've had major back pain off and on for 16 years now.  Had 15 lumbar injections.  L5/S1 herniated and degenerated.  Compression fracture in middle of back.  There have been many days that I had to crawl because I couldn't walk and my wife had to put my socks and shoes on me lots of times.  That SUCKS.  If you can't get a prescription today, ice seems to be the best for me, 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off.  Try to get an anti-inflamatory, pain pill, and muscle relaxer for your prescription.  30 minutes after you take them you will feel a little better.  Definately go see a good back doctor ASAP.
