The inconsistent quality of surplus is the I generally don't use it. The only reason I have the *AHEM* SS109  bullets was because I got a good deal on them a few years back. Still haven't used much of them because they are the least consistent bullet I've ever seen. They make cheap range fodder though.
You're right though. I definitely should read it. My fail was proof of it.

M855 is the US designation of the cartridge loaded with the 62 grain steel/lead core bullet, just as M193 refers to the loading with the 55 gr FMJ bullet.
SS109 is the FN designation of the same cartridge. It has a steel penetrator for the front half of the core, and lead in the rear half. |

You're right though. I definitely should read it. My fail was proof of it. This is how SS109 projectiles can be very inconsistent....look at the bottom left group. 
That group would have been <1moa, but the fifth round hit almost 2" away from the others! I like having M855 because its cool to punch holes in things my other rounds cannot! |

There's considerably more variations of weight from bullet to bullet. I didn't say it's not capable of good accuracy but it's still not as consistent as commercial. |
