At first I thought he was playing with airsoft.

That is some quiet ammo.

No, it is a semi auto, but the ammo can't cycle the action.

probably the cb caps. no powder in the round, the primer propels the bullet. i shoot them with the kids in the yard, sounds like a handclap, and they wont even penetrate a 2x4 enough to stick, they usually bounce off.  although they did have enough power for me to finish off a rabbit that was run over in my drive way, neighbor thought i was shooting a pellet gun.

I set up a little range in a basement once.
.22 is pretty simple to safely shoot indoors so long as you really prepare a good backstop.
The noise and the powder smoke present more issues than making it safe from ricochet.

My dad had an apartment tenant who decided to steal/split cable with the neighbor... Longest drill not long enough... Answer?

Stack a few phone books on the other side of the wall and plug it with a .22 revolver.

A .22 is not big enough in diameter. A .38 would be a perfect fit for RG6.

NOPE - we can have semi-auto .22's ONLY (not including s/a shotguns in that of course - they're ok here too)

We can have most other calibers in actions other than semi-auto

I was thinking the same thing.

So long as he has a backstop to eat up any possible ricochets, my only concern is ventilation.

This thread reminds me of the story my Dad loves to tell.

When he and my Uncle Eddie were young teenagers, they took
a Civil War Springfield rifled musket and fired off that fucker IN THE
BASEMENT.

Dad relates how it blew out all the windows down there and the whuppin'
they received from Grandpop, who was not amused.

Must have been worth it; Dad laughs every time he tells this story.

Dude!  Just tape two phone books together with duct tape for a backstop.  Then load your Walther P22 with CCI Subsonic HPs, screw on your Gemtech Outback II suppressor and you've got a TON of rainy day fun!

He's just shooting a light 22 load. Not a big deal. When I was in highschool I did much worse (or better). Loaded up a 44 1858 Remington Cap and ball revolver with light loads and shot it into phone books backed up with a few sheets of plywood. Not the best idea, but fun, it got so smokey down there you could hardly see. We had to wear bandannas to keep all the black powder out of our nose. We did this quite a few times. Once I sat on the porch to hear it, it was not extremely loud, but noticable. My neighbor asked about the sound. I said my brother was building something and that was the sound of the hammer knocking something apart. This was in Brooklyn in the mid 1980's. Good times.

A friend of mine told me this story. A few years ago he and some friends were shooting .22's in his basement during the cold winter months. When it warmed up he was out doing yard work and he noticed his neighbors outside looking at their above ground pool and noticed that they seemed upset. He took a walk over to see what was going on. The neighbor was pissed because he discovered that someone had shot up his pool over the winter. My buddy happened to look back at his house and noticed that he had these small rectangular fixed basement windows. He finished the conversation, went home and went down into the basement. Well apparently whatever they were shooting into had a wall behind it which covered over the concrete wall of the basement which had the window.

That is funny.

Sometimes when my grandfather would take me out to his ranch, I'd shoot a .22 off the porch at cans in the yard. One time I heard some metallic sounds and saw that a couple of my shots had ricocheted back and buried themselves in the hood of his truck. Woops. I didn't tell him, and a few weeks later he totaled that truck. Never found out.

Yep...the explosive in primers is lead based.

Shooting in a properly ventilated are or even shooting a few times in your basement is not going to kill you, but keep doing it over years and you can get pretty fucked up.

I used to shoot Super Colibris in my basement all the time, out of a Ruger 22/45 and a Mossberg M44.  Out of the bolt-action M44 they were quieter than my pellet rifle.
