I am looking for some advice, so hopefully any lawyers or LE's or anyone in general can help out.  I got a speeding ticket on December 31, 2008, I don't remember exactly how fast I was going over but would be no more than 10mph.  It was in a work zone and I never saw any workers however the officer said they were present.  I figured road crews would not be working on new years eve, I could be wrong though.  My ex gf's father is a lawyer and was supposedly taking care of it.  I know he got the date pushed back, and after he said it was either taken care of or lost in the system.  Months went by and I was still curious what ever happened and I asked him and he said he never received anything else from the courts, and if there was a warrant put out a letter stating so would be mailed to my house.  That never happened, so I figured the ticket was gone.  Today out of the blue I get a letter from the courts saying I owe a balance of almost $600.  Is there anything I can do?  I know the my lawyer friend was not lying he is a good guy and has taken care of a previous ticket.

So after almost a year and a half, why all of a sudden would I get this? any help of any sort would be appreciated.

check the laws for speedy trial in your jurisdictions, also ask for all the information about the case to see when your court dates were and what was done.

Ask to contest it due to age. My city tried to bill me for parking tickets, some were over 15 years old that they just "found" I contested them and have not heard anything since.

1. go to the courts immediately and explain what happened (bring letter with you so you can show how promptly you responded to their notice).  You will either set a court date, pay the fine, or the judge will have the ticket dismissed.

2. get documentation from the courts to show that the ticket has been resolved.  Go to the motor vehicle department and make sure that your licensee is not suspended; if it is then get it reinstated.

3. contact your ex-gf's father the 'lawyer'

I forgot to mention in the letter it said I have to appear in court on August 18, 2010 for a pretrial.  I have no clue what that would mean or why I need a pretrial? any thoughts?

Show up for court and take care of it yourself.
