Mine is a couple of years old and the trackball is starting to go. It occaissionally does weird stuff like type 'HLHLHLHLHLHHL' when I hit the "end" or "back" keys. I also lost a key, but I don't remember what it does so I guess it does not matter

Sounds like time for a new one.  They're so affordable now, anyway.  Consider how often you use it and you realize it's just not worth it to have one that fraks up.  At least as often as I use mine.

Depends on if you store it in the fridge or on the counter.

I am at a year on mine and keys are starting to stick.

I still have another year left on contract so I am going to hold off and get something nice when that runs out.

You can pop off the bezel and pull out the track ball assembly to either clean it or replace it.

That being said, I would just get a new one. What model do you have?

I've never kept a phone for more than about a year. I have 5 Blackberries sitting in a box in my gun room.

I think its an 8850? It's the only one without a phone (bringing a phone past the guards in some buildings is a pia)

Is there somewhere where I can get a cheap replacement/refurb?

Yeah they are fairly easy to work on and the parts ore cheap. Just gotta get yourself the right size tools and be prepared to void your warranty if you have one.

You mean without a camera?  I had the world edition 8830 which excluded a camera....didn't know they made Blackberries without phone features.

My previous Blackberry Pearl lasted for 4 years before I finally got rid of it a couple of months ago.  During that time, I had to replace the trackball twice.  It uses an old-school mechanical-style roller system (like those old mice with the rubber ball in the bottom) and those rollers accumulate crud over time.  It is possible to remove the entire trackball assembly and clean it, but I wouldn't recommend it without a set of precision tweezers as the parts are very small.

New trackballs are $10.  Buy one, pop it in.  Voila, Blackberry is as good as new.

2 to 3 years , we have 80 right now . the new ones have no trackball , now its a little touchpad thing that should not wear out as fast.

took my wifes to a phone repair store and they did a rebuild on it(Curve) for under $100. Not bad considering water damage fried it

That's actually an optical trackpad. You don't even have to touch it for it to work.

Blackberry Bold 9000 here. Less than a year old, trackball warrantied twice

My old Curve's trackball would occasionally go on the fritz.  I would turn it upside down and roll the ball around aggressively on a rough surface to clean the crud out.  Didn't feel like taking the retaining ring off and replacing it.  It was a Craigslist special, so no warranty.

They're easy to work on and fix, multiple youtube videos available on how to, and amazon is great for finding parts.

I've got a Blackberry Tour. Been replaced once due to trackball issues. Second one seems to be alright, but they do have their glitches and occasional problems.

Still worth their weight in gold!

If it's an 8800/8820/8830 - there's a seller on Ebay called fastlanewireless that I bought a BB 8820 for my wife from. It was in great shape, and they even give you a 30 day warranty (which, unfortunately, I had to make use of). They sent us a (what looked like) new 8820 in return and even credited $5 return shipping. Not bad if you're looking to get a used replacement.

I had one that lasted almost 3 years.

It seems the newer they get the less durable they are.  My last one made it less than a year.

I've killed one Blackberry––spilled water on it, but my current BB 8100 has been around for like 4 years. I've replaced like 5 trackballs but the phone itself keeps on keepin' on.

New every 2?

And they won't let you have a phone but a device that can tae pictures and send email is OK?

Curioser and curioser...

Why should they bother to make them durable?   Smartphones are now being released at an exponential growth rate.

If the trend continues, the average lifetime of a cellphone will be approximately 2 hours by 2011.

I've had my 8330 for two years.  In the past 6 months it has started exhibiting irritating chirping and clicking during calls.  I think it is planned obsolesence in the software updates; somebody probably said "hey, these damn things will last forever, let's create a software patch that makes it do weird shit so the user thinks it is wearing out and thus buys a new one."

My proofreading sucks, sorry. A phone is okay as long as it does not have a camera.

I have also had weird buzzing sounds from my blackberry
