I can forward the pics to a Forensic Anthropologist if you want a professional opinion. Yes.If you could do this please do so.I think it is a Tibia after researching it a little more.I just want to know. Will do, I'll let you know as soon as she answers back. |

Her response....
Can you provide 2 more pics?
I would like to see a cross section picture to observe the diaphysis cross section plus a picture showing what looks like the linea aspera of a femur (picture 3 seems to show a linea aspera). ETA: Her pic 3 is your pic 4. |

A couple of things.
1) May be animal bone because back in the day, folks would break open the bones for marrow for soup/broth. 2) The burn marks reinforce this food theory in my mind as encamped troops would be at a campfire. 3) Often on animal remains, you will see tool marks were tissues was cut/scraped from the bone. It looks like a metatarsal of a deer to me. |

Size seems indicitive of a tibia/fibia. That said, the only way you'll figure it out is if there is any viable DNA to test. Tibia, Fibula. Common mistake. And a good Forensic Anthro will sort that with no need for DNA. http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/05/99105-004-A031C53B.jpg Huh, I didn't know that. Thanks! |

Her reply after the last pics.....
It looks like a human tibia to me... I wouldn't be 100% sure *just* by looking at pictures but the cross section geometry, size and overall appearance matches a human tibia.
It's tough to give solid answers without microscopy, but that should give you something to go on. |
