I'm starting to wonder. He's still got some money (obvious from the fact that he's still was running all over the world) and money still buys justice.

Even if he does go to prison, he's big, violent, and obviously doesn't mind doing a little killing. He might fit right in.

Peru doesn't have a life sentence or death iirc.

He will confess to Natalie Holloway's murder (whether he did it or not and I am betting he did) to save his own ass and keep out of a 3rd world prison.

Since that crime predates this one the FBI will ask for extradition to the US (Aruba is not a protectorate is it? And if it is not hey will let the FBI take him) where he will be sentenced to life in prison without parole.

He does come from a a upperclass Dutch family though, so chances are mom might step in.

Joran Van Der Sloot Taken to Miguel Castro Castro Prison
sourced by Amy Judd

Van Der Sloot is currently being held in the Miguel Castro Castro prison and he will most likely remain there until the investigation in to Flores' death is complete. This maximum security prison (as seen from above) was the scene of an attack in 1992 when about 135 female prison inmates and about 450 male prison inmates were attacked by guards over the course of three days.

Many of these prisoners were beaten and humiliated and held in solitary confinement without medical care. They could not contact their families or attorneys. The Inter-American Court of Human Rights investigated the incident and found that Peru had violated articles 4, 5(1), 5(2), 8(1) and 25 of the American Convention on Human Rights. As a result they were ordered to punish those responsible for the attacks, provide medical care to all who needed it, return any bodies to the next of kin and to pay reparations to the victims and their families.

There are reports however, that Miguel Castro Castro prison will not be secure enough to hold Van Der Sloot and he may have to be incarcerated at Piedras Gordas (map), another maximum security prison.

According to details published about this prison, it is made of reinforced concrete and is about 161,458 square feet.

For security reasons again, not much information is disclosed about this prison, but this article in tribunalatina.com says this prison is reserved for extremely dangerous prisoners and it seems to have more security than Miguel Castro Castro prison.

Peru Prison Conditions According to Human Rights Report

The conditions in Peruvian prisons was one of the sections looked at in the 2009 U.S. Department of State Human Rights Report, published March 11 2010.

As of last year there were 44,800 inmates (2,794 women) locked up in Peruvian prisons and conditions are described as 'harsh'. If a prisoner has money they can purchase luxuries such as cell phones, meals from outside and drugs. For a prisoner who is poor these small luxuries are not possible.

All prisons are considered overcrowded with poor sanitation, lack of nutrition from the food with unsanitary kitchen conditions and epidemic levels of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. There is also unreliable running water, kitchen facilities and some prisoners having to sleep in hallways due to lack of space.

No kidding. Pretty easy to be big, bad, and violent when your adversaries are young women. I'm thinking this young man of privelege is about to see another side of intimidation, control and pain infliction, and for a very long time.

I tend to think he will be killed rather quickly.  Inmates are going to know the girl's father wants justice and will most likely make a contribution to their financial situation in jail.

The inmate who kills him stands to make their own stay in jail much less stressful.

The FBI can't extradite him for a murder in Aruba, they have no jurisdiction. Aruba is a Dutch protectorate. If Aruba hadn't screwed this up royally to begin with..... he woudn't have killed this girl. The FBI was trying to get him on extortion charges.

One flaw. Anyone outed as doing a favor for a cop in jail / prison will have a rougher time themselves.

No one is going to kill him or lay a finger on him for a cop. If they do it will be for their own reasons.
