That would probably be how they fit 60 rounds into it.

Think of 2 double stack mags that close down to single stack mags at the top (like a pistol mag, but angled to one side rather than the middle), and double them together.

IIRC there was some other russian prototype that used a quad-stack mag, but it never really went anywhere. That way it wouldn't be absurdly long, just pretty thick. You would have to worry about timing of the mag though....

Looks like they are about to supersede the AN-94.

It was supposed to be standard issue by now, but is expensive and complex.

Noticed this right off the bat. Look at the piston tube. It appears to be the BARS system they tested in the 80/90s. Looks like an M4 style buttsock, too, or atleast looked like it from the vid.

AFAIK, AN-94 production was stopped. Reason - insufficient quality of mass produced rifles. Izhmash really needs to modernize their machinery and equipment.
