Do you like Polka? I guess it has been a tradition in my Polish-American family. I had a polka band at my wedding and always loved the sound. Not the greatest polka dancer, but always loved it at family weddings/gatherings and Polish festivals in Michigan.

Here are some classic tunes to get this thread started:

1) Who Stole the Kisha?

2) THe Beer Barrel Polka

3) Frankie Yankovic on the Johhny Carson show

Listen to the Friday Night Polka Party with Frank Pawowski every week to "put that hop in my step."

Favorite band is the "Cleveland Honky Express" if only for the name

Don't know anything else abour polka music

Oddly, I think it sounds alot like marriachi music with the accordian and brass

Polka threads (and polka bashers) are serious bizness on Arfcom.

With my family ancestors being from Eastern Europe and growing up in central Pennsylvania, I was exposed to a lot of polka growing up. They were popular, and still are actually, at weddings and block parties. I can't dance to it though.

In my brief stay in South Dakota I thought it was hilarious that a local radio station played the "Top 20 Polka Count Down" on Friday night. No offense, but I did not realize that there was enough new release stuff for a top 20. Maybe it's like Bluegrass is here.

My folks use to polka dance all the time and were very very good at it.   They were always fun to watch out on the dance floor since they had danced together all their lives from when they were in their mid 20's.    My Dad said of all the dances with different music at them, the polka dance was the only one where he never saw a fight......said folks were just having too good of a time to even think about fighting.

Dad's been gone almost 5 years now.......I miss watching my folks out on the dance floor.

WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!

Dancing to Polka?

Jiminy Shit Christmas Crap Fuck.... I'm sorry but as someone born and raised in Miami, FL of Cuban parents I can't even picture folks dancing to Polka. Salsa? Yup. Merengue? Damn straight. Jazz? Not a problem, Waltz? Easy. But fucking Polka? No way in hell. I can't even listen to that stuff..... let alone dance to it. Hell, let alone to thinking that folks dance to it.

Wow..... you take the cake of actually being a honkie. I mean I'm white, European background, never had mixed marriages in my family, I support the Confederacy.... but you take the cake if you're telling me that you can actually dance to Polka even if it's shitty.

Lived a few years in an old mining town in Washington state, filled to the brim with Czechs, Slavs, Serbs, Poles, and just about ever other ethnic slice from that corner of Europe you could imagine - If your last name didn't end with "vic", "vitch" or "ski", you were definitely an outsider.

Man, they loved them some Frankie Yankovic... You couldn't find a bar jukebox anywhere in town that wasn't filled with it!

I wouldn't regularly listen to polka music just to listen to it, and I'm not much of a dancer.  But if they don't play "Roll Out The Barrel", "The Flying Dutchman", and "The Alligator Dance"; it ain't a real dance.
