[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Snakes (Page 1 of 3)

I guess it's time for another one of my snake picture threads. Please don't make any stupid comments about killing snakes or boots and hat bands. I would like just once to post some snake pics without someone craping on my thread or it turning into a BS discussion about burms in the everglades. If you have to make a negative comment feel free to IM me, or just look at the pics and shut up. I would really appreciate it.   Thanks.

ETA:Some IDs

Monocled Cobra (Looks like Naja naja or Naja atra but I assure you it is Naja kaouthia) Scale count for anyone that may care: Dorsals 28:21:15, Ventrals 187, Subcaudals 55

Sunset Monocled Cobra

West African Gaboon Viper

Rhinoceros Viper

Didn't Marlin Perkins (of Wild kingdom fame) get hit by a Gaboon Viper at the St Louis Zoo once??

That Gaboon Viper is beautiful!

Some odd years ago I got a phone call from a friend-of-a-friend near me, he had two snakes he needed to get rid of due to a kid on the way if I remember correctly.  Said he'd trade for a Suriname Red-Tail I had just received in trade.  Get down there and he has an adult female Northern Pacific Rattlesnake, and a juvenile female West African Gaboon viper.  I didn't get to keep them very long since the ol' lady wasn't exactly on board with the idea of having them in the house, but I'll never forget how amazing and beautiful a Gaboon is in person.

are they really aggressive?  I suppose you can't handle them?

If you have more in your collection, I'd be very interested in seeing them as well.  I'll try to dig up some of my photos from what I've owned over the last few years.  Currently all I have is an adult pair of Ball Pythons, had to give everything else up due to schedule changes that keep me from home a lot more than before.

Aggressive or not, venomous are to never be freely handled.  My Gaboon Viper was a sweetie, but she was still deadly and demanded a shitload of respect, caution and care...even the most simple tasks like changing out their substrate or watering them is quite a chore.  Some may not show aggression, but all it takes is one slip up on your part, one slip of the hand, one blink..a split second of not paying attention...for them to tag your ass.

Oh, I remember the days when it was just two of them. Now I have tons. I was going to take pics of some of the other guys but I thought these were enough for today. I will try to get some of one of my Albino Monocles that hoods really good.

Here's some old pics of two of my Cape Cobras. (I've posted these before.)

I've had about 20 different snakes, but not hots. Your collection kicks ass. I've enjoyed your posts about your hobby. Been thinking of getting another boa.  Been at least 15 years since I kept snakes.  Maybe, well see.

For the first time in 20 years, I'm not keeping any snakes right now. Just didn't have the time I wanted to spend on them. Never did hots, but might still someday. Where are you in FL? I did a couple of the smaller shows as a vendor when I was breeding corns and kings, maybe we've met? Do you go by the same username on ant reptile forums? It seems familiar to me.

Snakes...one of my fantasies is being swallowed by a giant snake...again, just a fantasy as I sure the reality would hardly be the erotic joy I imagine.

I don't really handle any of my venomous, although there are times that it is necessary. For example in order to get a scale count like on the snake in the first pic, or getting a stuck eye cap, force feeding babies, probing to find out if they are male of femlae, etc.   You can kinda tell in the Rhino Viper pic because of the glare, but I took all of these pics through glass. It's the only safe way to take close pics of these guys with an iphone.

Huge range with lots of variation. Southeastern Canebrakes tend to be lighter then Timbers from other areas. Some of the Northern ones can be almost black, while another right next to it may be really light with lots of yellow.

Would you please post those pix of your cobra eggs from a couple months ago?  I was telling my wife about them and she is interested.   Do you have any of them hatching?

Also, where do you procure them?  Knowledgeable colleagues or do you get them from Craigslist?

The anti venom question is very complicated, so I will just say I have contact info for 3 different suppliers of anti venom in my bite protocol, and I am not getting it by relying on some zoo to have it.  I am covered.

I have not kept mambas in a long time, but I have thought about getting back into them.

i spent a long time in the reptile house at the atlanta zoo.  they have a couple of different  cobras, a rhino and gaboon viper, and a mamba that is pretty big.  he/she actually impressed me the most. snakes are pretty emotionless, but that looked like pretty lethal just laying in his cage.  i am sure it was my imagination, but he looked like he knew he was badass, too.

I think you are talking about my ball python eggs that i posted before. I do not have any pics of my cobras hatching. You get to a point that you are so used to it that you don't think to take pics. I will see what I can do this year, but my snakes always cycle later than most so it will be a while.

Very nice collection man. I don't keep them or play with them myself but I don't go all girl scout around them either lol. I run into them a lot in my work now (pipeliner) and I let them pass and they let me pass. Only had to smash one over the last couple of years and he was determined it was him or me (copper head).

Either way, very nice photos. If I had a functioning scanner I have some pretty cool pictures of a South African snake handler playing with quite large King Cobras back in 98.

I have no personal experience keeping hots, but it is my understanding that Gaboon Vipers are like giant slugs until you look the other way for 1/100th of a second.  Then you go to the hospital.

Compare that to some other species where handling them with snake hooks is something like getting in a light saber fight.

Gorgeous animals btw OP.
