I need to have a root canal. Should I have me dentist do it or have a endodontist do it? Its on my #9 is the front left upper tooth.

Are you sure your dentist can do root canals? My dentist said he doesn't do them.

I did this a couple of months ago and I had great results using a dedicated endodontist. There are a lot of things that can go wrong, like missing a tiny bit of the pulp. I'd rather work with someone who has done that kind of work all day for years and has seen everything.

I just had one done 2wks or so ago at the dentist. Never had one before and seemed to turn out ok.

Definitely go with the specialist.  I had to get my old root canal redone last year.  The Endodontist asked me, "Who did this to you?" after he went in.  Found a 20 year old piece of cotton in there.    The before and after x-ray was eye-opening.

My dentist wouldn't do it and he's really, really good. He referred me to a dental surgeon for my one and only root canal for a deferred dental problem.

That was the first and last time I ever deferred a dental issue. $1000 crown? I pay cash to take care of it on the spot. It would take a $10,000 bill to make me sit through another root canal.

Go to the specialist if you can afford it.

Hell #9 is easy - single straight canal.   I do a better job than one of the local endodontists.  The nice thing about being a general dentist is I get to punt the hard stuff but 9 ain't one of them.  Just like roto-rootering a clogged pipe.

I had one it wasn't bad, get good pain pills afterwords I found out vicodin did nothing for pain and I only needed it to go to sleep during the day it was fine.

regular dentist did mine.

I agree with Bones.  #9 is a single canal tooth with a straight root usually.  A good GP should be able to handle it easily.  I send all my molars to an Endodontist, but single canal teeth are usually easy to treat well.   I am a general dentist by the way.

Didn't even need pain pills afterwards. And this was on a bottom back molar.

Endo all the way!  Why fuck around and WISH that you would've gone to one?

I never needed any pain pills either. Remember you gotta have that tooth crowned afterwards.
The crown lasted about 10 years and broke. NOt bad I guess. It was a 900 dollar root canal 10 years ago in Sunny Isles Beach, Fla. Best dentist I ever been to.

Update I had the root canal by a endodontist. That was by fat the easiest dental work other than a cleaning I have ever had done.

As a general I do 90% of my own endo I have done hundreds of root canals in my 10 year career, some have gone bad but a majority 95% are fine to this day.  A lot of GD don't do endo because they do not get a lot of education on them in school.  The trick is to take some classes after and get good at them.  Trust me I have seen some shit from endodontist in my career just because they are endo does not gurantee they are better.

I will never have another. Have had several. Its only a matter of time before they become brittle and break. Might as well put your money into a bridge or implant right from the get go and save a grand. Nothing more frustrating than spending more than a $1000 for a root canal and a crown only to have it fall apart 3-4 years latter.

The cost wasn’t bad $700 the thing that sold it for me was the ice test. He had a stick of ice and places it on each one of my teeth around the one that got worked on. I could feel it on every one of my teeth except for the one that was dead. I have an existing crown in place on that tooth for grinding issues. It helps if you don’t grind through your teeth. I can’t use night guards I break them or make the problem worse. I shatter hard guards usually on the first or second night.
