We've been having a lot of Blue Angels threads lately so I thought I might post something you haven't seen before. This video is from back in '06 by a group of PC simulator pilots known as the "Virtual Blue Angels". It is really quite amazing. Almost as much so as the real thing.

These guys have meticulously recreated the entire Blue Angels routine - flying online, using the same communication, coordination, and even guidance from real Blue Angel pilots.

You might not think it, but flying these formations on a computer screen poses many equally challenging problems to the straneus g-forces the actual pilots must deal with. For one there is no real depth perception, there is no actual cockpit... and of course lets not forget LAG! So to pull off what these guys have done takes some real dedication and teamwork. Enough of my babbling, enjoy:

Before clicking on that I was immediately prepared to write it off as potential the gayest thing I will have ever watched, but it was actually pretty decent.

I don't even want to know how much work went into creating that.

There's actually many different virtual demonstration teams like this from around the globe that participates online every year in the Virtual Festival of Acrobatic Teams. Oh and yes there is a Virtual Thunderbirds team and yes the Virtual Blue Angels are still better.

I watched it a year or two ago...I laughed so damn hard when I saw a SU-25 take off for a solo demo, do a big climbing loop and then just smash into the runway like 30 seconds into the display...

That guy probably cried so hard, made it all the way to the VFAT and just....well, I was going to say either nose dived or bombed, but I cant think of an adequate comparison that isnt a pun

So are you a member of this team?

Ah hell naa... even virtual flying of that kind takes some serious skill. I'd just crash and burn or end up ejecting into the tailpipe of the lead plane.

What flight software are they using? Is it LOMAC?

That's pretty neat.

Yeah, which never came with F-18's... watch the vid again and notice what kind of cockpit they're in.

I did like that game but the tutorial missions were so buggy you could never learn how to properly fly in that game.

Edit: I never played Flaming Cliffs just the original.

That was bad ass!   I've played flight sims and that had to take a tremendous about of dedication and time to pull that off.

Did not see the high sub-sonic sneak from a solo.  Not sure that would translate well virtually anyway.

Two favorite maneuvers  are the solo roll were one plane becomes two  at 9:00  and the echelon break and roll at 9:38

So basically, it's just like real life then?

Russian planes crashing at airshows and all that.

That was awesome!

Flying flight sims like that takes some mad skillz!

I play flight sims like Falcon 4.0 AF and FSX and all i can say is that it takes a serious amount of time and effort to get that good.

Really cool.

I used to play flight sims when I was a kid and I always wanted to be a fighter pilot. Maybe some day I'll get my pilot's license.

I need to beef up my computer and get a good flight sim.

yeah, this is lomac, modded to fly the F/A-18 3d model with the F-15C cockpit and flight model...

There is also the virtual thunderbirds, who are equally good or even better.. one of their members was recently wounded in a V-22 crash.. I hope he got better by now.

I was part of a virtual accro team, when we were only a couple out there 2003-2004-2005).. we were the Virtual Haute Voltige Team.. we've been going in Japan (Motegi) and UAE (Al Ain) with Haute Voltige for live demos !

we were flying the Fw-190A5 from the Il2 FB 1946 flight sim series.. I can say we were quite good too ;) !

this was us :

i'd be glad if someone can embbed these..

Meh, don't get me wrong those guys have some amazing talent. The Virtual Thunderbirds too... It's just that neither seem to have as tight of formations or synchronization as the Blue Angels.
