Is it possible to make a logo if:

1)  I am not proficient with photoshop
2)  I have never even used Illustrator
3)  I have far more gold bullion than design or imaginative skills.  (none)
4)  I don't feel like paying random-craigslist-shmuck a bajillion dollars?

Yes. You can do it....there are websites out there that allow designs to be made for decals etc.
You could use a similar program to make one, or download one of the bazillion 30 day trial programs
and make one that way.

What kind of logo are you looking for? I've made a few here and there.

How about
"Lead, the new gold"

You want to see the duality in an image.

I think the best logos are ones with two images or meanings nested in one.  Very ingenious.

Like the Browning logo.  It's got the profile of a doe inside a buck.

I don't know if that was serendipitous or not, but it's sweet.

Been wondering this myself as I'm starting to look at an interesting side project.  Tagged for more info such as...

What's the best logo?  Simply vs. Complex? Black/white vs. Color?

I am a printer and i would suggest going with something on the simple side. Thinks about what all you plan on putting your logo on, Something complex can work great on a t-shirt, but not come out so great on a business card.

I'm at work, and I use Jobrelatedstuff at work which doesn't have access to IM. Can you shoot me an email through the site? I am on that all day.

Thanks for the referrals, guys. I appreciate it more than you know.

You're starting a new business, don't you?

Talk to a real PRO about a logo, as this is one of the most important things about your venture.

A properly designed logo has to cover plenty of bases to be a good one, it's not just something that looks good on paper.

Depends on the business and what your competition looks like... Is it upscale and needs to look like an old-school fine European company, or is it more retail and competes with "Deer Crack" and "Extreme Shock" type products? Or someplace in between?

This is where the wheels come off when you go cheap on a logo. You can go overseas and get one for meatballs or do a logo contest or whatever, but you're not getting the thinking that a professional designer who bends over backwards to understand your company concept can bring... I'm talking about any good designers worth their salt out there.

No insult to the amateurs at all. But I've done this a long time (18 years) and see good companies go cheap and get crappy corporate visuals all the time. I firmly believe there are a lot of companies that have great products, that go under because they don't know anything about marketing. Or they think they do, but they really don't...
