For almost 20 years I've been working in IT as a DoD contractor.  My current contract was just renewed last month for a five year term, so my job isn't going anywhere.

Today I was quietly notified that there will be some GS positions opening up in the facility (postings go in next week), and I was "encouraged" to apply for one of them.  The openings are for GS-12 positions w/ DC locality pay.

For those of you who have worked both as contractors and directly for the government, which did you prefer?  What are the upsides/downsides of each?  The GS-12 salary would be less than I'm making now, but depending on how the other benefits (like health insurance) work out, the net paychecks would be comparable.
