Fucking Brits apparently aren't competent enough to start an official thread about this, so they left it up to America Lite to do it. There are saying the vote count will go into Friday morning. Sounds like Brown is going to "lose", but that he might join with the 3rd party to form a "Liberal Coalition", I.E. Liberals win, again.

What happens if no one can/will form a coalition? I can't speak for Britain, but in Canada if there is a 3 way tie (there are 3 "major" political parties and about a hundred Zillion smaller, lesser known ones) and 2 of the 3 parties cannot form a "coalition", Parliament continues on, as is, with the 3 way tie. All votes will be split 3 ways (in theory), but because 2 or our 3 parties are either left or far left, they tend to vote similarily, so they form what is called a "loose-coalition", IIRC, meaning although nothing is official, the parties have an "agreement". |

ZANU-Labour needs to go.
Anyhow, it looks like their Conservative Party has hardly a conservative in it these days, but it is still better than either of the alternatives in this election. Looking at British politics, it is a damn shame that the Parliament Acts of 1911 and 1949 were passed. The Commons really need to be checked, and the House of Lords is a good institution for this. Even the queen cannot exercise her righ to veto legislation without causing major unrest. It is absolutely ridiculous how few checks and balances there are in the UK's government. It is no wonder they have some of the craziest and some of the most disgusting legislation I have heard of coming from a Western country or an Anglospheric one. |
| Whenever I think of the lesser of two evils/elections, I think of this and it always cheers me up. |

Bump. A hung Parliament is now a mathematical certainty with the Conservatives on 291, Labour on 247, Liberal Democrats on 51, and others on 27 with 34 results still to declare. The likely outcome now is that Gordon Brown (Labour) will try desperately to hang onto power (despite never being elected as Prime Minister or even as leader of the Labour party) and will try to do a deal with the Lib Dems. Biggest danger here is that the Lib Dems get electoral reform in return for their support. Electoral reform = a switch to a proportional representation system which would result in there never being a majority government in the UK again. |

Very true, they are the lesser of the evils. I was in the UK last weekend and saw a lot of the election coverage, the leader of the Conservatives was asked in an interview about his pledge to cut government spending and the first thing our of his mouth in response was that he wouldn't touch healthcare or welfare...... couldn't risk losing the votes of any of the massive entitlement class. |

I guess we play the waiting game now. It really galls me to see the Tories with a lead, but not enough to win a majority. Does this mean I'm going to be stuck with Gordon Brown and a Lab/Lib coalition? Or perhaps the same fronted by Nick Clegg (one thing he was demanding at first in case of this result). This is nuts. I'm young and have only been eligible to vote in the last two General Elections including this one, and I'm only now finding out what this 'Hung Parliament' deal is. From what I understand, however, even a Lab/Lib coalition might not have a majority when combined. Messy! |

Good analysis, thanks for posting it. |

Labour never win the popular vote in England, they rely on Scottish and Welsh votes to gain power. and that's what annoys me about the whole devolution thing that has happened since I left the UK. Wales and Scotland now have their own Parliaments, England does not have a separate Parliament, the Welsh and Scottish MPs sent to Westminster have enough votes to override the majority vote of the English people. England basically has no say and has been made the bitch of Scotland and Wales. |
