I have a septic system in the house I rent. I'm chillin in the master bedroom playing with a gun sling and go to put my AR back in the safe which is near the master bathroom. The master bath has a shower which I don't use, a toilet, and a sink. I try to remember to run the shower once in a while to keep the U trap full but I guess I haven't done it in a while. Anyway I'm putting the AR away and I smell something pretty foul. And I'm like eww I think thats coming from my bathroom.
So I open the door and this smell and nasty ass gas about makes me gag and barf. I hit the vent and turn on the shower and close the door. Shit made me feel pretty sick and I had to go outside for a few minutes. Still feeling like I got my breath taken away a little.

Should I seal that drain up with some duct tape? My dad says some some shower heads drink into the drain pipe after you turn off the shower and I should keep running the shower occasionally.
Update 2

Happened again tonight.
I've been running that shower once every day or two. Thinking maybe one of the plumbing vents is clogged up or there are septic problems. Calling the landlord tomorrow.

The P trap dried out. Just run some water in it every week or take a shower in it.

I have a similar problem whenever I run the washing machine.  I can smell it coming from the upstairs bathroom sink.  I can also hear a 'glug glug glug' sound coming from the sink when the washer is draining.  As long as I remember the plug the drain in the sink it's not a problem.

Anyone know what the problem is?

I'd say your trap on the sink is dry, but the glug glug makes me wonder if maybe the vent is plugged up? If your traps are all in decent shape, there's nothing plugging up the stack vents on the roof and you use your fixtures occasionally you shouldn't have any trouble.

OP, sounds like your shower trap is leaking somehow, shouldn't be losing water from the trap that fast, unless your septic is backing up past the trap, in which case you've got real problems as you'd have overtopped your baffles and dumped solids into your drainfield a long while ago.

Yep.

Glug = back pressure = plugged vent.

I'm calling the landlord tomorrow. I've lived here almost 2 years and I talked to the fellow who lived here for several years previously. He told me he had no clue where the septic tank is and it hadn't been serviced to his knowledge. He had a whole family living here. But I live alone.

This exact same thing happened to me when we bought our house a few years back. We were running water into all the sinks and baths/showers and still it smelled like BHO.

Finally found out it was coming from the AC unit upstairs - septic gas was getting into the water drain line - trap was empty.

Put some water into it, and the smell stopped asap.

We had a septic system in our last home and started experiencing a similar problem/smell.  Problem was much worse than trap odor.  The pump had burned up and the sewage was backing up everywhere.  Went on like this for awhile.  The house was still under warranty and the builder kept telling us to run water and the smell would go away.  When we finally got that prick out to the house, he discovered the problem.  Once the problem was identified, the smell went away.

Do all houses have pumps? Ive seen ones that do but don't know if mine does. I've only been int he crawlspace a few times and didn't take notice.

A little vegetable oil in the p-trap. Problem solved. Repeat after that at shower is used.

If the leech field is higher in elevation than the tank, guaranteed you have a pump. If you were having a pump issue you wouldn't know it until either your tank alarm went off or your toilet stopped flushing.

some septic sustems have pumps , most do not. The pump would most likely be outside burried in a pit or pump chamber. the only real sign would be a dedicated breaker in the electrical panel.

sounds like the shower drain has a leak in the trap . It should take weeks or months for the water to dry i in the trap not a day or two

Sewer gas is not good, deffinately get the Landlord to fit whatever is amiss
