I've been using vmware server for a few years, running my firewall and DMZ box with great success.  However, I'm getting tired of the web interface incompatibilities with FF 3.6 and IE8.  I want to try virtualbox, but it doesn't have remote management.  So I installed nxserver/client to access the (linux) desktop remotely.

But then it got me thinking.  Does vmware server have a standard (non web-based) gui?  If so, I'll just use the remote desktop + vmware server instead of taking a chance with virtualbox.

Are you running this on a standalone box? Or are you virtualizing on a box that you use for other things too?

I know that ESXi has a terminal interface. Not sure about the other products.

Exactly what I was thinking –– if he has a standalone box JUST for virtual servers, I would toss ESXi on there... Free and AWESOME...

virtualizing on a linux file server.  I cant do bare metal (esxi) as it doesn't support xfs, one of the raid file systems on the server.

Virtual Center client should work.

I've read that.  But I can't figure out where/how to download it.

Hmmm.... look into KVM –– it is the new virtual platform that Red Hat and a few others are moving to (The dropped Zen (not to be confused with Xen) to move to KVM)

I didn't know there was a web interface. What version are you running?

I use ESX/VSphere with virtual center. To install the VMWare infrastrucutre client on your desktop, just go to the IP address of your esx server in a browser and you'll find a download link for the virtual infrastructure client.

ETA: Disregard. Just noticed you aren't using esx as your primary host.

ESXi, if you want the client, goto the IP of your host's system and you can download the client from there.

the updated version of server isn't too bad though, but I would definitely move into ESXi.

I had to use it in my networking class.
