| Given the limitations of the 5.56 cartridge, which would you choose as a serious-use precision rifle....SPR type with 18" barrel, or RECCE type with 16" barrel? |
| I guess what I'm asking is if the SPR concept itself is valid. Given the range and energy differentials of the 5.56 vs. the 7.62, would the ideal 5.56 precision rifle be better utilized towards the closer-in engagement ranges, and a 7.62 rifle be better for +300m use? If that statement is true, than the smaller and lighter RECCE would be the better solution. But is it true? Is 5.56 suitable to use out to 800m in the Precision role? |

Travis Haley's experiences in Najaf show that at 600+ meters, 5.56 is still effective. It might take 3-5 shots, but it is still a deadly round. Oh, and as of 2006 IIRC the mk12 was shot for shot the deadliest small arm in our inventory. |

Yes, it will get the job done at 800m. The difference between 18" and 16" is a bit more elevation DOPE at that range. Those two inches will not break the platform at that range. |

It's not like 7.62mm M118LR is state-of-the-art or anything. It's all relative with the military standards. |
