Have a feeling I know what it is. Looking for confirmation. Taken by a friend at her house.

ETA: cat brought it into her house, another reason why I hate those fuckers.

Pit-Viper––––> Triangular head.

Markings seem to be chevron like, hard to see end of tail but I'd say rattlesnake.

Cobra. They are all Cobras, except the ones that are rattlesnakes, cottonmouths, or copperheads.

The kind that is good when dead.

Diamond shaped head is a dead give away.

Juvenile Cottonmouth.

That's what I'm thinking. The top bands (chevrons) don't look right, but I don't know what juvenile patterns look like.

+1 Juve Cottonmouth, if it was a timber rattler it would have a light ring around the dark markings.

Diamond shaped head is not the best way to go about ID'ng a snake.

Google is your friend:

I hate cottonmouths!

If I had one of those in my house, I'd burn the whole house down.

There aint no snake shortage in Looseyanna.

Just kill the fuckin thing and be done with it.

Kill it with fire...and then cut off the snake's head.

You must find a lot of them.

I reckon the stray cats keep the population of them down around here.
4/22/2010 7:46:47 AM EDT
[#30]
Whatever it is (My guess is cottonmouth) you should kill it with a big damn stick.  Triangle head=kill it.
4/22/2010 7:59:23 AM EDT
[#31]
KILL IT NOW FOR THE GOOD OF MANKIND
4/22/2010 7:59:45 AM EDT

Pygmy rattler
4/22/2010 8:13:17 AM EDT
[#33]
To those concerned:

I found out about this days later and asked her to forward the picture shown. If I was there we would see another version of smashed/shot "alleged" viper. The cat was playing with the SOB and dragged it insided. It apparently wriggled and tried to defend itself but after getting its ass kicked by the cat, remained perfectly still and the cat lost all interest in it. the tail was bloody from catplay/drag etc. That's all I know, other than I should bring my Diamondback in .22 along with me next time (she has a lakefront backyard at her apt. complex)

100% poss.  Id on cottonmouth

this is pretty close..... that triangular head is a bad sign...... shoot it then look for round pupils. if its got slit pupils like a cat, then its definately a badguy.

this is pretty close..... that triangular head is a bad sign...... shoot it / run it over with the lawnmower, ( i killed a bigassed rattlesnake once while mowing the yard, didnt end well for the snake )then look for round pupils. if its got slit pupils like a cat, then its definately a badguy.

Truth be told!

Spent a summer there, saw 5 a day easy. Thank God for West Coast Lineman's boots and a handy 10/22 carbine.

And ya, how'd the cat fair after the tussle?

Our Main Coon kills the hell outta slithering shit like that.

Snake in back yard=dead snake. I'm no expert and don't claim to be. Therefore I don't care if its poisonous or not.

BINGO!   I revise my previous statement: Cottonmouth.

Triangular head and no rattle - Cottonmouth.

I'm surprised the cat didn't get bit.

Looks like a water snake to me. I don't know the species down there, but it doesn't look like a Cottonmouth.

Cat didn't get bit?  Looks poisonous to me.  I've caught my share of assorted poisonous snakes in AZ but those were various rattlesnakes and coral snakes.  I sat on a log once in NC and had a copperhead dart out between my legs.  Had a large diamondback chase me when I missed it with the tongs.  I don't usually kill snakes but I'm not against killing the dangerous ones if they get nasty.

It isn't a viper and is not venomous.  It is a water snake, probably a diamondback water snake, but the photo isn't too detailed.
4/22/2010 2:20:57 PM EDT
[#46]
Water Mocassin, also known as a Cottonmouth.

As it warms up once again, poor Windustsearch will be there to reassure Arfcommers that the water snake they just brutally shot/stabbed/maimed/smashed was not a cottonmouth/rattlesnake/water moccasin/cobra/coral snake/Gila monster and it is now safe to step down from the kitchen chair and start acting like a man.

Look at the top of the head and the eye placement; completely different.
