So i am aware that Mac has a Unix base is it possible to install Linux software/tools on a Mac using a tar ball source code? Thinking about picking up the new MacBook Pro with the core i7 and this would made the decision to drop the coin much easier.

It is a custom unix/linux that they have made. Some stuff does work. You could allways just install some vm software ( virtualbox) and run any os on it, or you could just install whatever distro you please directly on the hardware. I love the apple hardware.

I use VMware Fusion to run Ubuntu 9.10 on my Macbook Pro. I have to use Ubuntu, for work, but I have run a few RHEL/CENTOS BMs on here as well. By the way, the core of OS X is BSD with a very customized X running on it.

My understanding is that it pretty much will. I'm saving for a 13 or 15" MBP now.
