I just found a tick on both of my dogs. I treated them Sunday for the first time this year. Both ticks were latched on my dogs. The ticks looked dead when I pulled them off. I am going to give both of them a flea and tick bath tomorrow. I'm guessing the tick treatment I gave them on Sunday killed the ticks but they stayed latched on. What is in tick medicine? Is it something that goes into the dogs blood to kill the tick when it tries to latch on?

You need to check legality to be sure, but a REALLY effective tick remedy is found in the cattle insecticides.  It is sold as "Spotton"––and the chemical is fenthion.  You put one CC on the nape of the dog's neck and they will be fully protected from all external parasites for a good two weeks.  Check with your Vet.

The various "flea and tick" collars are garbage and don't work.  You might try permethrin too––but it can be dangerous, so make sure it's labeled for canine use.  It works, BTW.

Your Vet is worth his/her cost for this, as ticks are very dangerous to your dog.

I have my dogs on advantix 'I believe'... one is a yellow lab that stay outside all the time.  When I brought her home before, she would have about 10 tics on her... Since I have had her on it, I have not seen a tick on her in 3 years.  It's a pill she takes and a spray that goes on her.

We use Advantix during the peak summer months because it is suppose to have a 'repellant'..  We use Frontline about 8 or 9 months of the year..

To answer your questions - YES, the frontline/advantix is absorbed into the blood stream and kills the ticks..

Most of the time the ticks will die and fall off, but at times they will die and stay attached..

Just found out my Lab has Lymes –– Frontline takes about 24 hrs to kill.  vet said a collar "Protecticks" is the best kills quickly. Antibiotic 4X daily for 4 weeks.  Also suggested  that the wife and I get checked
