[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Mandals (Page 1 of 2)

Someone explain flip flops to me. I could never get them to stay on my feet and find the feeling of a piece of plastic between my toes quite uncomfortable.
I wear mandals, or "Jesus sandals" as my friends refer to them. They stay attached to your feet, and the particular Nike pair I have is probably five years old now. |

Dudes, you're doing it all wrong! Just get some simple Columbia thong style flip-flops. They're the most comfortable ones around. I have several colors and they get it done every time with style. I have some nice Keen and Merrell sandals for hiking if that's what I'm going to be doing, but for everyday use putzing around, the simple flip-flop is all I need. |

Easy, flip flops are for (1) the beach; or (2) people who have never heard the phrase "fight or flight". (#2 is because you cannot do either in flip-flops.) |

Finally the sandal weather is back. Thank God for Florida, thank God for the Gators and thank ya Lord for my man sandals. http://www.zappos.com/images/z/1/0/6/1068182-p-MULTIVIEW.jpg

I've never even worn flip-flops. I can't imagine wearing sandals. ![]() I did try flip-flops (called shower shoes when they were issued to me), but never got the hang of walking in them. Never sandals though.
Curl your toes downward and flip flops will stay on. |

These are the best mandals I've ever owned, hands down. Super comfortable, secure, 100% leather, Vibram sole, and orthotic foam forming the interior. A bit spendy @ $125/pair, but they're hand made and last forever, and they're re-soleable if you need to get it done. http://www.windwalkers.net/images/sandal_blk.jpg How well do they hold up to water, salt, mud, etc...? I have a pair of TEVA sandals that are close to twelve years old now. They've been from the Hoover Dam to Dunn's River Falls and are just starting to need replaced. The sole is wearing thin and the velcro is getting weak. I just ordered a backup pair but I don't think I'll be able to part with my favorites until they completely fall apart......should be another couple years at least. |

Crocs are best as backpacking shoes. They are so lightweight you can afford the weight and have something besides boots to wear in camp. Around town, too "plasticy" feeling and ugly. Strapped sandals stay on your feet and are attractive. Nice alternative to shoes when the weather is hot. Flip-flops are convenient, just slide your foot in and walk to the beach or the local store. Takes just a matter of days to get used to them. Not so great for athletic maneuverability. Somewhat tacky if worn at inappropriate locations. |

I really like 'em a lot and they've held up fantastic under all conditions. My first pair is my "go to" pair and is about 10 years old now. They're really thick leather, the stitching is heavy duty, and the velcro is some REALLY heavy duty commercial stuff (you scrape your hand with the hook side and you'll know it...) I've had them soaking wet with both salt and fresh water, had 'em caked with mud, and simply spraying 'em off with a hose and letting them dry naturally has always been sufficient. I've never bothered to oil 'em or waterproof 'em, just bought 'em and wore the hell out of 'em. I ended up buying a second pair to keep in a bit better condition (and the first pair was brown, second are black), but I have got to say that I haven't owned a better pair of mandals ever. These actually replaced a pair of Tevas the first time. I've never looked back. Also, the design on these are super comfortable. something about that heel cup, and the way the top is cut that makes 'em just fit perfectly and really comfortable. the arch is nice too, and the orthotic foam really forms to your foot over time, but doesn't break down. You can buy 'em online here or just get some more info if you're interested: http://www.windwalkers.net/sandals.html |

can this thread get any gayer? you boys step in a fire ant mound, walking round the yard, see how long you like those pretty little sandals.. Brush 'em off and keep going. It's Florida...nothing you wear is gonna keep bugs off you. This is where he asserts that they have more (and bigger) fireants in TX than in FL.

You would have all the babes at the bingo hall giving you seductive winks. |

I remember Tevas. They were fashionable/trendy in the early 90s. I owned a pair. As did I. And probably will again. While I sort-of like the "Jesus-Sandals" the wife got me and do wear them, they're not half as comfortable as those ole Tevas I had, and it's not advisable to get the leather wet in creeks and such - they're a bitch for light-hiking (or even walking, for that matter). Meh, it's all a matter of preference. If I was REALLY worried about what others' thought, I'd be one paranoid antisocial bastard. Fuck'em. I'm married, 34, and don't give two flying fucks what others think of my fashion sense (or lack thereof). |

I'm sure I'll get flamed to hell for this, but it's the truth. Ever seen anybody under 50 wearing them? Ever seen anybody in shape wearing them? I could go on, but you get the point. |

I"m as redneck as they come and I wear them often when I'm not barefoot. I usually pick peas in bare feet. The fireants sting, but you quickly wipe them off and go back to work... |

Quoted: I have a much older version of these: http://www.campmor.com/wcsstore/Campmor//static/images/footwear/15063.jpg These things are fucking great! Mesh sides so they drain water almost as well as open sandals, plus they have great grip and offer full foot protection while in the river/pond/ocean/kiddie pool/whatever. Heck, this pair actually looks like an improvement over mine (keeps debris out of the top). Maybe time for an upgrade. wow i kinda like those. |

I've never seen old, fat people in TEVA type sandals down here. Mandal wearers around here can usually be categorized in one of several ways: pasty IT worker, mid-50's white guy in jorts and t-shirt, heavy women, northern visitor. I'm not a fashionista by any means, but once again those mandals are fugly. |

Do it all the time, getting bit by fire ants is just a part of life here. I guarentee I can get those little bastards off me faster by dumping a flip flop than trying to untie shoes. Getting those little spawns of hell inside a shoe a'int no joke. |
