I'm not saying that he's not an idiot, but read his description of the video. "(Apartment) Management told me not to touch the stove or I woulda flipped off the breaker" I do things like that when it comes to dealing this idiot authority. Let their stupid decision/instruction hit critical mass and blow up in their faces. You can get a lot of things done and out of them in the aftermath. |

most oven elements are 220 volt. meaning each connection is hot with respect to ground. and usually, only one leg is switched to control the temperature. if the insulation breaks down and the element arcs to the outside, grounded jacket, it will arc like that even with the oven turned off. same thing with the burner elements. know where the circuit breaker is and which one to flip, that is the only way to stop it. |

Here's a PSA: if an electrical appliance is sparking, smoking, or going incandescent, do not bother with the video camera and youtube post. 1st: Isolate power: best done at the breaker. If you have an important meeting to attend, and are in a hurry, try turning the oven to "off" 2nd: Go ahead and call the fire department. 3rd: You might want to dig around in your closet for that fire extinguisher your mom got you for Christmas back in '93 People's stupidity never ceases to amaze me. In a previous life, I was responsible for lab safety, particularly regarding electricity. I had a client who found that the equipment shocked him, and put up with it for 43 days, finally telling me about it at the end of the job. I had to add the following to my briefing: "If the equipment shocks you, come and see me. We can probably fix it." |
