I have upgraded my computer and am giving my old computer to my nine year old. Does anyone have suggestions for internet parental controls? Are there any that are free?

For a nine year old I would seriously consider white listing the sites that I would them to go to and just hard code the addresses while disabling DNS.

I have setup Microsoft Family Safety Live for a few poeple here in the office. It's free.

With it you can lock it down completely or jsut a few sites or nothing. It will monitor there viewing and you can look at reports to see where thye are going.

You could always talk to your kid about what's appropriate and what isn't...

But hey, who trusts their own children

4chan is a great site for kids, extremely safe.  It's sort of like a kid's version of Myspace actually.  You post a picture of yourself and your personal information, and wait for friend requests to start rolling in.

I trust my son, but that doesn't stop accidentally finding inappropriate things.

I'm just curious how much internet surfing does a nine year old really need to do?

Not too much at the moment. He is going to get the computer as a birthday present. He likes lego.com and other kid sites.

Norton also has a free service.  Looks good, but I haven't started using it.

Me, I would not let my kids anywhere near the internet until they are 14. Then, they get a few pages just so they learn how to use it. When they are 18, they can have fun. What does a 9 Y.O. need to do on the internet anyways?
