I guess protect and serve means you're supposed to act like spoiled pieces of shit and call in sick and put innocent people at risk because of your precious pension fund. This really impresses upon me their professionalism and integrity. My god, who can blame them for putting my safety at risk so they aren't forced by the evil city to pay the 10 percent “employees” share of their pension for the next nine months and contribute to their health-care costs based on a sliding salary scale. HOLY MOTHER OF GOD. Next they'll prolly be asked to go without kevlar to save costs 
We can't expect the thin blue line to have to live like the rest of us. Your job not worth the fucking pay? There are hundreds of people (including moi) who would fucking kill to have gig half as good as a TPD officer, and I'll gladly do a job because I want to serve the people, not collect a fucking pension for eating pastrami and writing speeding tickets. Gotta fucking love it when the entire SWAT team calls in sick like a bunch of whiny fucks because they won't get a raise. Being a fellow JBT, I agreed with you, OP, whole heartedly, but I think you could have left this line out. #1' a gig half as good'? wtf?, explain. #2 there's more to our job than eating and writing speeding tickets.. |

The love of cops and hate of unions on arfcom is an unexplainable phenomenon.
There So many arfcom members that are so quick to defend even the most heinous civil rights violations as "there must be more to the story" and the same to state fuck the unions. Yet most of the police and law enforcements officers in the US are in unions and those union protect shitty employees just like they protect low performing losers in every other profession that has unions. |

Nothing better seperates the good from the bad in a unionized PD quicker. Show up for work? You are one of the good guys. Participate in the "Blue Flu'? You are a pathetic hunk of human garbage who is not fit to wipe the dogshit off the dogcatchers shoes, much less be entrusted with the authority and responsibility we give to a law enforcement officer. The public trust given to you demands honesty, and that includes honesty in the face of financial risk or gain. By partiicpating in this patheitc exercise these officers are demonstrating that they are 100% willing to lie to their employers, and forgo the safety of their community, for financial gain. And of course the union publicly decries it- but will they kick any officer particpating out of the union for being involved? Of course not, because these things, just like the other socialist labor strategies like work slow downs, are all cooridinated under the table by the same union sitting there saying they have nothing to do with it. |

Albuquerque had the same problem back in August 1975 iirc.
Cops struck because they didn't get a raise. Supervisors stayed on the job. The crime rate dropped dramatically. Link to story. |

I really don't know how I would feel if people called out forcing me to work OT or work without any back up... the trust between co-workers would be gone. |

Dude, I'd take my position on all this, if I were you, namely: I stay the fuck out of Toledo, unless I cannot avoid going there.
TPD has been understaffed for as long as I can remember now and I'd not be depending on them for protection in Toledo. If you don't have one already, get a CCW license and even the odds. |

This city (Toledo) is already like the wild west. It's about as lawless as you can get! Speeding tickets? Puh-lease! I haven't seen a TPD crusier pull over a car in ages!
The cops that patrol the ghetto stay busy dealing with hood rat drama, but the ones in the "quieter" areas of town sit in parking lots waiting for the shift to end! Every night around 2300 it's like a TPD parade down Douglas when the shift ends. They all come popping out of their hiding spots along Westwood.

This isn't a Toledo thing in general. Public service pensions are a financial time bomb waiting to explode. Cities and states simply do not have enough money to meet the promises they have made and something is going to have to give. Just wait a few more years and see.

The week my wife graduated from BGSU (I graduated from UT the summer before), we pulled up our stakes in Maumee and moved west to Colorado.... Obviously, this has worked out well for us (the GTFOing part). |
