So I'm a freshman mechanical engineering student at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI, and I need a summer job. I've worked at an engineering office before, and know my way around AutoCAD and Inventor. Also very good with computers in general. What are the chances someone on this board could hook me up with a job for this summer either around Grand Rapids, or on the south side of Chicago? (I live in Highland, IN normally). I've sent out 20+ resumes and have only gotten one email response that said "We're sorry, we use Purdue's internship program." Obviously I'd love something in the engineering field, but really, anything will do at this point! |
| I don't know of anything in the GR area, but I've had several friends in the various engineering programs at Western Michigan University get pretty decent jobs/internships at various companies in the Kalamazoo area including Parker Hannifin Aerospace (one friend was making $17.50/hour there) and Flowserve. If you are able to get an apartment in Kalamazoo or are willing to commute everyday there may be some options in that area - there are tons of engineering related companies in Kalamazoo. |

I'll definitely have to look into that. Thank you |
| You're welcome. I don't know if those companies are still hiring given that the economy isn't great, but my friend who was working as an intern for Parker was able to hang on to that job for about 2 years and turn it into a full-time job as an engineer. He's making pretty decent money there for a fresh college graduate. At the very least these are pretty good places to start looking. We've also got Stryker in the area, so that might be another option you might want to consider. |
