The plastic lenses on my 98 Ford Expedition are clouded up.  Do any of the cleaner / polishes sold actually work?  I need better light, but can't see spending $125 ea for new housings.

I hear they work about 2/3 as well as buying new housings

I have not used the branded headlight polishers.

I have used plain old polish and a buffer with great results.  I made a set of Avenger headlights look new again.

If they are really clouded down past the surface imo you are fooked.
I'd just go ahead and buy the new enclosures.
If you think it is surface clouding only then you could try some of the Meguiar's products for plastic, they do work but only on the surface.

I'd love to know if the $8 kit from wal-mart works.  my 97 explorer could sure use it, but I doubt it would last any longer than a clear wax of some sort.

Read about some who clean the lenses with simple green, and then carefully use a heatgun on them to clear it up.  I tried it, but probably didn't do it long enough.

If it is grime fogging, buy some standard car polish. Apply it with a clean cloth. Rub it in, and it should clear them up pretty well.

If it is moisture fogging, drill some small drain holes in the bottom of the clear lenses to let the moisture dissipate.

Walmart sells a kit made by 3M for about $20.

Most 3M products work well.

the plastic is polycarbonate.  when made, there is a thin protective layer, preventing oxidation.  when that layer wears off, the polycarb oxidizes.  they can be polished, start with 600 grit wet or dry and work up to 2000, finishing with rubbing compound.

then to protect, 3m makes a film that can be applied over flat or nearly flat lenses.  or you could try clearcoat.

Found a site called 1A Auto that has a pair for $55 with free shipping.  These are new with a three year warranty.  May just say hell with it and order them.

There ya go!
Resurrecting old polycarbonate is a short term fix at best anyway.....

True, but if the budget replacements aren't UV coated they'll go just as fast as the polished ones.
The 3M kit is supposed to be good if used correctly, but haven't done it myself (a pro bodyshop guy I know says they're GTG)

Just did the 3M kit on my car.  I had one headlight replaced after an accident and the other was hazed over pretty good and looked pretty bad next to the new light.

It worked exactly as advertised.  It was impressive.  And easy.

I told a friend about it and he couldn't tell which was the new and which was the old light.
