The wife and I have taken to splitting our meal when we eat out. Most places that we frequent, serve enough for 2 on 1 plate, with most of the meals being tossed or boxed up. Typically a meal for both of us ran about 35 to 40 bucks. Now it's averaging about $20.

Not only are we saving some money, we cut back on the calories. When we go out, we don't eat salads.

Yeah, yeah, I know. Some might think we are hurting small business when we do this. But in reality, if most places reevaluated the sizing of their meals, most would probably cut back on the portions and
cut some costs.

This thread will not go over well with the overweight crowd.

Meh.  Good idea.  Just don't get pissed at the $5 "second plate" charge at some restaurants.

It does cost the restaurant more to serve two, even if the two only order one dish.  Two glasses of water to fill & wash, two plates to wash, two napkins, two sets of flatware to wash, etc.

Haven't had that happen yet. Most places will set several smaller plates for bread or appetizers with some never getting touched. They got to wash those even though they are not used.

We don't charge ridiculous fees for an extra plate where I work. The dishwasher is getting paid to work anyway, and he uses more water than you'll drink every time he loads the machine. Not to mention that so few people ask for it that charging wouldn't make a difference.
