I am looking to pick a set of these up but, was wondering if the little tab needed to be closed for hearing protection purposes?  Does it still offer hearing protection with it open and allow you to hear normal sounds such as talking? Can you hear talking with the tap closed?
Thanks for your help,

im not sure which version i have,  bought them from brownells.   work great with  .50   my 308    etc etc.

i always keep them closed though,   i think when you leave it open it helps musicians.   for firearms purposes i would NOT leave it open

At certain levels, yes.  Does it still offer hearing protection with it open and allow you to hear normal sounds such as talking? Can you hear talking with the tap closed? Yes, but it's not quite as clear.  Personally, I just keep them closed.  I hear conversation well enough.  It's about like if you had earmuffs on (the kind for warmth).

Thanks for your help,

I actually left mine open yesterday when shooting my AR and didn't notice any discomfort from the noise actually! I normally keep them shut when shooting rifles and open for pistols but forgot yesterday and it really didn't bother me at all.
