I have a 15 year old toll brothers masterpiece with central air.

i had a new furnace priced out, they wanted like $20,000.

But the furnace is just a smallish natural gas one, it's around 135,000 btu.

how the heck could it cost that much for a new furnace when all the vents and gas line are already there?

What do they need to do?  unbolt the old one and bolt in a new one.

I dont get it.

it cost the same as a new car to build a tin box with some gas jets and a blower motor in it?

does not compute

My furnace, similar in size, cost just over $1100 in 2001.  That was JUST the furnace itself.  I'd get another estimate.

You might shoot an IM to the Do It Yourself Forum moderator––ZW17.  He's an HVAC guy and can probably offer guidance.

Damn.  $20,000?  Sounds like whoever gave you the quote has a kid in college or wants a new boat or something.

I had my entire HVAC system  (outside and inside units, not the duct work) replaced this year for $6000 and I thought I got raped.  I have a 3.5 ton heat pump system (heat pumps probably won't work in PA).  I received $1500 back from the government since it is a 15 SEER system.  I also received about $400 back from my utility company for going with a efficient system.

heat pumps are OK here in eastern PA, a lot of our weather comes sliding up the appalacians from florida

Jeez, my 2 stage 95%+ one cost a whopping $900.00 for the furnace. Once you go above 100K BTUs they do cost a bit more but only a few hundred bucks.

Or, was this really for a complete change out with A/C included and installing duct controllers and all the marbles?

And you NEVER get just one bid, 3 is a minimum and 5 is better.

For a straight fnc install, 2 to 3 K is plenty for ALL the work and includes the cost of the furnace. That should get you a 90-95% furnace.

I'd also have the check the A/C pan and install a new one while the furnace was out, the cost isn't much at all and would save $$$ down the road, especially if it's a steel galvenized pan.

Tell your boy to f off and that I will do it for a cool 17.5.  I'm more than willing to wave the awesome fee and give ya a little off the furnace, being an arfcommer and all
