Well, maybe. I bought an old farm house from family. The house has been in the family for as long as it has been standing. The story is that in the 70's the old farmer took a 5 LB flour sack of gold and stashed it in the house some where. More then likly if its there its in a wall or a second story floor. What would be the best way to look for this with out gutting the house. Would an ultra sound machine work? would it go through an old plaster wall? Dad owns a vet clinic, and this has always been in the back of my head... Does the hive have any other ideas? |

Metal Detector? That should be worth a few coin for suggesting it! Post pics when you find it! Inside a house full of nails...metal pipes...fittings... Sure a nail would go ...."rrreeeeerr" But wouldn't a fucking gigantic bag of gold go "RRRRRRRRREEEEEEAAAEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRR RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRBBBBBBBBBBBB ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZWWWWWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRBLEEwhataworldwhataworld!!!!!1!!eleven!"

Metal Detector? That should be worth a few coin for suggesting it! Post pics when you find it! Yep. Post pics...at todays market 5 lbs would be worth around $90,000!!! But 5 Lbs of gold would not fill a 5lbs flour sack now would it Don't think he said it was filled, just that the guy stuffed some gold in a 5 lb bag. |
|
Quoted: Your best bet is to just burn the whole place down and then find the shinny puddle of metal. When we bought the house the insurance agent said that would be the best thing that would happent to us. paid 42,000, but would be 160,000 to rebuild.... hmmm... mabe he was on to some thing... |

I helped a friend find some hidden handguns in a house he bought.
We both knew the guy who previously owned the house stashed guns like a mad man when he was there. We used a thermal imager. It was real hot outside, cool inside, that helped quite a bit. On this one wall in the den, where the heat was blocked in this one wall we could see some revolvers. Took the panelling off and found (2) Model 15 Combat Masterpieces and (1) Model 10. In the Back bathroom celing near a closet was another Model 15. |

Quoted: sounds like a wild goose chase. Thats the biggest reason I haven't just stripped the house down to the frame. If I or any one else in the family actually knew for sure, it would be done by now. The only person that was involved has been gone for 20+ years, and no one alive actually knows what he did. There ARE people alive that saw the sack of gold first hand though. So there Is a decent chance that there is some truth to this whole thing. |

If you find it and sell it, you'll be down for capital gains taxes, and possibly state and federal inheritance taxes as well. Not to mention tearing the family apart as previously unknown "relatives" come out of the woodwork demanding a cut. Did the old feller leave a will? Did it specify everything he left behind, item by item, or take the easy road and define percentage splits? Where do YOU stand in all that?
The local coin shop in these parts will buy or sell up to $10k per customer, per year in gold before they get nosy for ID and credentials for the IRS. There's a way thru the mayhem though, when it comes to "found" gold. Common sense tells you to keep around 10% of your total net worth in precious metals as a hedge against bad times and inflation. If you apply the found gold to this purpose, you never have to sell it, and you'll legally avoid the cap gains tax. This will free up other money you would have had to use for this purpose, so now you get the benefit of selling the gold, without having to sell it. Things to think about... |

Will definatly look into leagal aspects if i find any thing. The house was sold to me knowing that it could possibly be in there. I don't for see any major family issues that couldn't be over come. The family is pretty low key and no dramma. But money always changes people. I just don't see me finding it becoming a huge issue. The people that were involved in the estate are all in there 70's and well to do. |
