I've got the chance to get either a Glock 22 police trade in .40cal or a DPMS AR. Which would you do? I've never fired a Glock.

Glocks are not a favorite of mine.

there are some good things about them, they are very reliable and relatively inexpensive.

the trigger design and function is flawed.  it basically amounts to a really heavy and creepy single action trigger pretending to be double action

and the problem with the unsupported chambers is plain old bad design.  nobody would tolerate it from any other gunmaker, but glock is the koolade du jour

in summary, get a colt 6920 and a decent DA/SA handgun

Both.  Though I'd rather have a 19 than 22 :)

shoot a Glock .......then make a good decision. they might not be for you.

Ditch them both.   Get a G19 and an Colt AR.

Another vote for G19 and an AR.

It matters on what you already own.  If you already have an AR15 and no duty size handgun, get the Glock.  If you already have a duty sized handgun and no AR15, get the DPMS.

If you have one of each already, just go with which ever one you like better.

Expensive Glock or cheap AR?

I'd get neither.  Forty caliber is an oddball caliber.  Stick with 9mm or 45.  DPMS is not exactly a first tier rifle manufacturer.  I use their lowers and parts kits, but their barrels aren't chromed(unless that has changed) and there are better complete rifle makers.

Between those, I'd get the AR.

.40 is far from an oddball caliber.  It just isn't as popular in non LE circles.  I could live without out just fine but it is readily available almost everywhere in the U.S.

DPMS does make chrome lined barrels, but they seem to be the exception and not the rule.

This I believe is how I'd look at it. If you don't have either , get both. If you already own a handgun in .40 , adding the Glock may be good. If you don't own .40 already , you may want to get a different Glock. A plinker AR is always a good thing IMO.

Buy the glock and build the AR. They can be made from top shelf materials for less than that DPMS. FYI 40cal. is a great round! Look at the ballistics compared to the 9mm, otherwise most bad guys carry a 9mm. You can use their ammo when your low..

Alright... a bit more information:

There were several Glocks at a local shop late last week when I called and asked about them... prices for them are around $300 each... but they're used. I like Sig's but they keep falling overboard when I'm fishing.

The DPMS is new and part of a group buy and comes with some extra engraving... I'm leaning towards the DPMS.

I dont think a Glock is anymore bouyant than a Sig.   Have you thought about tying the gun to your rod, or trolling motor, that way if it does fall over, you can raise it back up?

edit -  How the hell do they keep falling over in the first place?

Well, you know, I keep them on top of the tacklebox for those really aggressive catfish... and I keep knocking them over the side...  Oh well... we all tend to have boating accidents and lose our firearms...

It's not a $300 DPMS... it's more like $800...

I like new AR over used Glock... I'm thinking I'll get the DPMS.
