Do you guys keep a running inventory of your firearm collection on file with software like Word or Excel?  I use Excel to keep track of my collection with info including... make & model, serial #, value of the firearm and when and where I bought it.

I can sure tell you this, stuff adds up fast. I hope the wife never finds the file

I only keep a record of make/model/serno, in case of either (a) burglary or (b) insurance-claimable loss (fire, flood, etc).

Uh, I can do it in my head.  You have too many, I will store them over here...

I have weapons I haven't seen in years.

I have one safe I haven't opened since I moved 3 years ago.

I have such a file for all my valuables. The file is secure and updated quarterly or about that often. It's for "just in case."

I use Excel.  It works just fine for my needs.

Excel, converted to an iWork spreadsheet.

besides the Make, Model, Serial Number, I also put the price paid, the date acquired, and other pertinent notes on the firearm

Also do an ammo inventory.  Keep track of what I have and what I shoot.

For years I kept it in a simple database in my palmpilot.  Currently in a simple database in my ipod touch.

I use GunTracker, but it has no category for "sold or disposed of."  I'd like to keep an inventory of guns that I used to own, and who I sold or gave them to and when.
On GunTracker, though, the only option is to just delete the record completely.

I set up a basic database in Access to track the make, model, serials and to link to high quality photos of each weapon.  On the plus side, I also have jewelry, electronics, and other valuables listed there.  Handy if you know how to run Access.

I take photos every year to update my inventory. Close ups of the make/model/serial number and then an overall photo to document the overall condition and any accessories added. I've got a Remington bolt action with more in the stock, scope, rings, and mount then the rifle cost originally.

Umbrella policy covers replacement costs - not current depreciated value.

You might want to inspect said safe!  I had a golden rod go bad and some guns started to rust in less than 3 weeks!

I keep an Access database that details every firearm with their serial number, purchase price, related accessories, and a single picture. It also keeps a complete inventory of all my ammunition as well as a detailed log of every round fired along with best/average group sizes, malfunctions and some other data.

With a few clicks I can tell the exact round count, preferred ammunition, accuracy, malfunction rate, and a host of other things, for every firearm I own. It was a bit of a pain to set up and maintain but the ability to track that kind of stuff is invaluable to me.
