God, I hate computer maintenance.  My eval copy of Windows 7 is expiring, so I need to back everything up and reload XP.  Not a problem on my machine, but the family machine is a pain in the ass.  It seems that no matter how many times I try to get the wife and kids to save shit in folders I set up for them, they end up putting crap everywhere.  Now I get to spend who knows how long tracking down and saving all their files so they don't lose them when I wipe the drive.

If they can't put stuff in folders, it's not your fault when the drive gets wiped.

Get a seperate HD for your OS and other stuff. Wipe out C: and everything is still intact.

Wipe them out. Maybe they'll learn.

Agreed.  I am still in the process of reinstalling everything on my machine.

You should get a Windows Home Server set up. The backup feature is so slick for when these things come up. You can just pull up a copy of the backed up system when your ready to pull the files over.

You don't need to do a clean install to go form RC to RTM windows 7. All you need to do is modify a small file in order to to an in place upgrade.

IF you've been using Windows 7 for a while, I'm actually surprised that you're willingly going back to XP. I get visibly angry when I'm forced to use an XP machine.

I probably just go buy a copy of 7 off NewEgg and say hell with it.

No need to give the wife an excuse to bitch because things are different again.

Don't forget to vacuum the dust bunnies out of your fans and tower interior...I usually procrastinate on that job.

Just leave the power supply alone.

Every single power supply I've dusted dies within a week.  No idea why.

While I was at it, I decided to clean the garage computer as well.

I think it needed it:

Well it is in the garage.  I should pop the cover more than once every year or so.
