All,

I am going to be buying a ring very soon, hopefully next month.  I have a general ring layout that I am looking for and my soon to be fiancee's parents presented me with a family stone of theirs if I wanted to use it.

The center stone is 1 carat or so and already set in an old ring.  Can I just go to Jared's and say "use these diamonds in my ring?"  The diamonds are in a pretty secure setting and the ring itself might need to be melted to remove the stones.

Thanks.

I would imagine any jeweler worth his or her salt could do that easy, including Jared.

ETA:  Apparently everybody hates Jared's, but I got my wife's rings from them and they've been nothing but awesome despite the fact that I was anything but a big spender.  YMMV.

Do not go to Jareds!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No chain store anywhere!!!!!!!!!!!

Find a local jeweler and have him show you his work.

Retail. NO.

Mom and pop. Yes.

Retailers want you buying their shit.

Oh and congrats and good luck.

Good advice.

Find a local guy and get it done right the first time by someone who takes pride in their work, not a chain that could give two shit about it after they get their $$$.

This.

I went to Jared, did not have a "bad" experience, but I did not buy the stone from them. They were the only place with the exact setting my fiance wanted and it was a whole lot easier than having a jeweler recreate the exact same setting.

When you take it in, a good jeweler should also be able to show you some of your diamond's inclusions to be sure you're getting the same thing back.

And in before the "never marry any woman who can't understand that an AR is more practical than a diamond...which is a scam" crowd

They can use whatever stone you have.
They should be able to pull that baby out of whatever setting its in right now...gold is not very strong.

Depending on what you have in mind will depend on what they can do with it.
If you are after a solitaire and wrap, they can switch out the headset to match the dimensions of your stone.
If you have a specific mount that has diamonds on the side or something special like that it might be harder matching your stone with the setting.

Ask them to look at a Stuller Findings Catalog...its like the bible of jewelry.  That should also give them the impression that you know what you are talking about.

NEVER, EVER PAY ASKING PRICE...NEVER EVER.

(1) DO NOT GO TO JARED'S. Go to a small local place that does custom work. My fiancee and I are getting our wedding bands done at a local place totally custom. It cost the same if not a bit less than standard rings would at a chain store and we're getting exactly what we want done. They've now tweaked the design for the girl's ring twice.

(2) Yes, any custom jewelry place will totally do that. People do it all the time.

Ask around for recommendations for a local jeweler - and make sure you're getting the same stone back.

Concur with everyone else so far about not going chain, find a local.

Next, does the family stone mean anything to your soon to be fiancee? Is it the same cut and style she wants? Just because it's fairly decent sized doesn't make it right for her. If it doesn't fit what she's asking for I wouldn't use it and just go with something that you know she likes.

Also don't sink your life savings into a ring. You can often get a better deal, quality, and size at the locals but that doesn't mean you have to blow all your money.

And if she's one of those chicks that set a specific size, material, and worth of a ring she wants, really really think about this before you do it.

Search around, there was a thread a few weeks ago in GD that had some good info for anyone buying....questions about buying online, online forums, the use of the HSA, etc.

my sister worked for a jeweler for a couple years, and know this, up till about 1970's stones were either CRAP or A+ quality and VERY VERY little in teh middle, if your stone is pre1970's it is very likely that is is SUPERIOR in quality, color, imprefections, cut, for it's size. get a couple estimates on it due to that and then get insurance.
