Built one many many years ago. Your post brings back a lot of good memories. Sold it for quite a loss, but a fun project neverless.

well, here is what im starting with. im pickin it up this weekend. it will be stripped, smoothed out, and painted. im not sure on the color, maybe cherry red. after that stuff, time to get an old beetle and cut the chassis. then all the down and dirty restoration. im also getting header exaust w/ barley legel baffeled stinger. and top it off with a custom roll cage. also, this is intended to be a street buggy, NO offroad use.

I've already finished my dune buggy - two years ago!
Now I'm redoing it all over again! Better clutch/pressure plate setup, better suspension, better seats, better electrical layout, better brakes! Painting it again (Safety Yellow!) Lifted the seats higher, brought the steering column (if you can call it that) over, rather than under, the front lower 'windshield' tube. While getting a little crazy at my farm in West Texas, I hit a culvert straight on and broke one of the motor mounts. I had a friend weld better motor mount arms this time! Good luck. allow me to explaine. a "dune buggy" is a buggy with a fiberglass body, built onto a VW bug donor chassis. they are like little fiberglass body topless cars. [b]MANY[/b] people use the term "dune buggy" to describe a sandrail. sand rails use VW parts many times, but are build on a tube chassis/body. for example. the fallowing pics are dune buggies. the first one is street only,and my main inspiration. I saw last week up on the net where they are supposedly building the Manx again from the old original molds.the price seemed fair too.on ebay recently I saw a first it was a Meyers Toad/Towd.plenty rare stuff.sure am glad to know there are some VW nuts on this site also as I am about ready to put my 69 westfalia on the road yea I know it aint really a offroader but it is going to see plenty of dirt roads with the AR's an FN-FAL an bunch more goodies on board.......

the upper photo's remind me of my 'pardners rail the last time at Sand Mountain NV. he took the front end off on a jump.as for the strap your butt in an hang on deal it's just that!But Goddamn you just gotta love it!it's all part of blastin through the Desert on your Hiwathl!
