So, I read an article about a Marine who was involved in the capture of the #2 man in the Taliban. The article gave out the Marines name, photos of the Marine, photos of his mother and his fiancee, etc.
Where does the military stand on giving out this info? Some of the comments about the story have brought up the fact that the Taliban is no laughing matter, and there may now be a target on the family. I would tend to agree with them. It is likely the mother of the Marine is just wanting to brag a little, but I think it went overboard. I am not posting a link because I do not think there should be any more publicity toward this Marines family that could turn out negative. I am just wondering what people think about the OPSEC violations...... Discuss. |

Back when we fought enemies that would capture you, keep you for years, and torture you the entire time... I think it's important to keep things like family photos and names under wraps.
With this specific enemy, all they're going to do is lop your head off and post the video on the internet. No, I have no plans of ever being captured alive by our current enemy... I refuse to be turned into a Taliban recruitment video. |

Found the story. Looks like only his hometown news is reporting it and it looks like they only got the info from his mom.
I'm calling BS on the Marine's story. Or at least some embellishment. He may have helped capture some Taliban, but it wasn't the number 2 guy in Pakistan. That was a Pakistani intel and CIA op in Karachi. |

Or at least some embellishment. This, even if it was true, he opened his mouth, so its his own fucking fault. I have no pity for idiots that get caught talking on the net, emails whatever. My family is usually pissed when I don't tell them what/where I've been. My parents didn't know I left the county for a few months. |

We've never fought a war where everybody could be simultaneously shooting and posting facebook updates before. Real news is almost impossible to acquire even with hajiphones, video cameras and the interweb readily available. I'm amazed at how good infosec really is... |
