I spend way to much time on here and maybe I could do some good or help out.

Been there, done that.  I'm not sure it's for everyone.

Someone insulted me directly while I was a moderator.  I replied in kind because I don't take shit off of anybody.

I was no longer a moderator after that point as moderators are supposed to be above that sort of thing.

I don't back down when I'm insulted without cause.   So I won't be a moderator again.  It
was OK while it lasted, but if it restricts me from responding as I feel,  then it's not the
right task for me.

Generally Staff contacts someone they think might make a good moderator and talks to them about it.

The Report button feature is a great tool for board members to use when they see a problem post.

The best way is to ask a staff member.  However, asking is the fastest way in ensure that you will never become a moderator.

ETA:  I think you have to have 10k+ posts and a few years on here.  You hare halfway there.

I don't know if I can ever get that many posts.
