Catalyst and Tariffs
March 7, 2025

Like many of you, the Catalyst Game Labs team has been watching recent economic developments. We have been hard at work developing strategies that would make our position more resilient to the rapidly changing world trade dynamics that we have been seeing.

Like much of the tabletop gaming industry, Catalyst gets hit especially hard by trade tariffs. Our industry is inherently international in nature. We are lucky that we have been able to be flexible with pricing in the past decade. However recent changes with the market have shown us that our flexibility was not quite prepared for a change of this magnitude.

With the current level of economic uncertainty, we have to make some tough decisions. In the next 60 days we will be releasing a comprehensive update for this process, including some unfortunately necessary price adjustments. These price adjustments will be applied to new products and product reprints that are directly affected by tariffs. As we adjust to this new situation, we will likely expand this policy across our entire product line in order to average out increases. We are working hard to ensure that we can keep or even improve our value contribution to you and your game tables. We have prided ourselves on maintaining our relationship with you and your local game stores throughout Catalyst Game Labs’ history and we will hope to continue that trend in the years to come.

The CGL team would like to thank you for sticking with us as we all work through this uncertain future together. We are happy to share our games with all of you and want to see our community grow through a shared love of the IPs and games we steward.‍

Gee, golly, if this is true, you might want to cater to your core audience.

... well, so much for that.

Yes, that's real.

I guess they think their core audience is people like rem alternis - desperate females with nothing to offer who lose themselves in romance delusions.

Also ... "inherently international in nature" -  no.

No it is not.

Ya'll choose to utilize the chinese production.  That's a choice.

I need to make a clown meme on the progression of Battletech.

I'm not sure if it all started with Dark Ages clicktech, or just the death of FASA and the use of unreadable fonts in sourcebooks.  Or if it goes all the way back to the first time the setting and character of the game became "fluff text".

I see Dark Ages as the death of classic Btech as an IP.  It watered down the rules into absurdity and shit all over the lore and fanbase; much like Wizards did with DnD when they made 4.0 and did a 100yr tine skip with their novels (killing most of their characters in the process).  Since then they have not recovered, only survived.

I think it was the predestination of the entire setting that did it.  Everything that could happen in Battletech then ceased to be changeable.  Who cares who you fight for when the world is doomed to a stupid reset.  The Jihad books where the Word Of Blake manifested more power than everyone ever and every single footnote was used to make them overpowered just to kill everyone and reset everything was also miserable.  Annihilate entire planets that your characters have hung out on for years and either ignore the books or just go "yeah, I don't want to play with this anymore".

Fate set in stone.  Devlin Stone.  Who sounds like he starred in Skinemax flicks in the mid 2000s.

The Catalyst discord, confirmed by the designer of the boxset. No other information was given out as this is a leak so they are waiting to hear from the higher ups on what they can actually say beyond confirming it's existence.

The creator of it said, in the Discord, that it's not an April Fools' joke. This is, apparently, a test for AU Battletech stuff.

Here's a link to what appears to be a promo video:

https://x.com/Lutra_Gaming/status/1903880821402161374

They can't ship their stuff, they chose the depressed wages country to build their stuff in, they can't get orders right, they're making romance novels ... and now alternative universes?

This just HAS to be an april fool's joke.

Talk about NOT knowing your core support audience.

Its' getting panned hard on twitter.

If they are really dumb enough to try this for real ... GW is probably going to come down on them like a ton of bricks, and it will be hilarous to watch.

This looks like teenaged fan fiction work to me.

ETA: someone put a YT up of the video leak

My nuanced take on Battletech Gothic is as follows:

If this is damages the IP due to perception that the studio is creatively bankrupt, we win.

If this is a financial bomb, we win.

If this miraculously succeeds, we win because they will support it which means development of further canonical lore goes on hiatus until this horse dies and is throughly beaten. Ergo we still win.

Also for the people freaking out, they're the same ones that profess not to care what CGL does. Why are you trying to stop your enemy from making a mistake? Sun Tzu,                . That's Art of War 101.

ok now that I had about 2 hours of laughing my ass off over the new #battletech product I still think it is an April Fool's joke but here are some thoughts.

Good points and bad (VERY LONG)

Good
I admit the Maunder looks pretty cool, and the atlas for those that can't 3d print will enjoy this as they can not have a purchase model for each faction but can interchange the heads and parts. This is common in 40k of many players to have several arms for weapons so they don't have to purchase 10 models for each weapon assortment.

This does give them more options for further capital to go into other projects and can make a wide assortment of "Universes". Cyber Universe,  Steam Universe, Cat Universe, etc, and too many I don't want to give them ideas so I'll stop there, but in general it gives them more capital for other games, etc.

For the new players of BattleTech this I hope will get them into the real BattleTech (FASA) even CGL BattleTech to increase the player base.

BAD
If it was up to me this is not BattleTech, but another game altogether, and calling it that is just a slap in the face to the BattleTech that sprung up over the past 40+ years. Would have been better to call it something else. Wizards of the Coast did just that and after 3.5 its just became another game so might as well call it something else than D&D. Granted this is another "Universe" they are making including the normal BattleTech we all know, up to 3068.  :P

I was just dumbfounded at this but thought that they must be hurting badly to come up with a great money grab where they can pick any universe like Steam BattleTech, CritterTech or anything else to pop out a box set, people will purchase this and I would figure they would make about a hefty profit per box set but in volume sales if it takes off. If they have the template done for say Steam BattleTech with the Gothic already done they can just insert X in Slot Z and bam can crank out these babies very fast and cash in.

This does tie up resources to advance their own projects of BattleTech, ShadowRun, FrostPunk, just to name a few and lets face it the products they have been cranking out have been luke warm at best.

The appeal of this sort of product eludes me and the fans as I think they didn't read the room on developing this product but to just cash in with my above example. They left X (tons of their fans, their YouTube channel is in shambles, they live in a eco chamber on pedosky and other avenues and are full of activists that they dont have a lot of logical thoughts on how to make money.

I would see in the future if this is real, I still think its fake April fools joke that they have are just hammering in the final nails in their coffin trying to gasp for air, unlike TSR did the same thing. They were reaching too far with all sorts of projects when they should have just concentrated on a couple, and this was one of many downfalls of TSR during that time.

Umm 40k anyone

If you like it ok up to you and more power to you as everyone has different likes and dislike, I wont tell you your wrong as its just an old farts opinion. But this is just showing how desperate they are for the mistakes of hating the fans, firing of Blaine Pardo, hiring Bryan Young, hiring and supporting activists that attack and dox their fans, creating content nobody wanted, failure of their social media accounts (Youtube, Pedosky, X Leaving everyone here) and living in their own echo chamber. The writing is on the wall

All I can say is good luck as you're going to need it.

Still think its a early April fools joke, nobody can be this dumb.

Yeah one of the things that puts me off of the regular game is their sculpts are not all that great they use cheap plastic as well. They just don't scream high quality.
They are still better than the old Ral Partha sculpts that were always a bit puny looking IMO.

Replying to @FlashMan-7k here because I didn't want to thread slide "The Other Arfcom Island" thread.

I've had this thread in my subscriptions because I guess I am an eternal optimist and I thought there might be some hope for the franchise. After reading about the "leak," it would appear my optimism was grossly misplaced.

That was my thought.  Looks like the crazy stuff off one of the later periphery/merc covers.

But I can't see buying any of this.  Ever.

Battletech is dead until someone else buys it.

For me the beginning of the end was when houses turned from great dynamic empires into being written as though they were the weakest of their memes.  And that's probably mid to late 2000s writing, and has continually declined since then.

I don't fully hate the idea of making a radical change like this for an alternate world, but it's a route already taken with every grimdark 40K/Mutant Chronicles out there. And this looks like a lot of work to write and repackage the same game.

An alternate history where Amaris defeated Kerensky and the five houses under Amaris' tyranny finally rebelled, leading to lowered technology, with focus on infantry and vehicles, and mechs basically at Tech Readout 3025 level forever, would make an interesting setting book.  "Amaris Triumphant" set in 2850 with redrawn maps, different backstory, and lists of annihilated worlds would be cool.  Not as a reset, but as an alternate campaign setting.

But they won't do that.  (Or they already did and I am so unplugged from their bullshit that I don't even care about the things I'd write if I got all of FASA's rights.)

I don't view it that way.

I think I understand why it looks that way though.

The setting has suvived practically disappearing, the books going out of being published, coleman "opsie"-ing a large chunk of business funds into a house expansion, running off at least one LD, not paying their authors and freelancers (to include stackpole) and etc.

If the IP goes dormant I think fans will just continue onwards with it.

I dont't think they've ever done anything like that.

So ... kinda funny, but that's what dark age was supposed to lead to - resetting back to the beginning of the setting, tech and force level wise, back down from the huge multiregiment and division on division and warship fights in space, but it didn't take.

They did get kinda smart and outline eras, which makes sense because player tend to stick with their favorite and ignore the ones they don't like, and while early on it was sworn up and down that they wouldn't backfill gaps on older eras, they did start doing historicals.

Basically everything is there for people who love tech level 1 scavenger era stuff (though they no longer use the tech level designation).

Something you'll find that's neat is that megamek lab and solaris skunk werk mech builders are now able to do things like per-year availability and I think they even have the rarity tables worked in alongside faction tables.

If you haven't looked in a long time, megamek and mekhq have come a very long way. They even have hidden units working now and you can do aerotech in it with aero/ground combat interface.

Dark Age was a vehicle for clicktech, and also stole the future.

Battletech was a slowly evolving universe, from the misery of the 3025 era to the renaissance of the Helm memory core that led to the 3030s wars to the founding of FedCom and what should have been the end of Liao and a detente with Marik and Kurita.

Without the clans and Word of Blake, the successor houses would have slowed until the Capellans were gone, then probably settled in an imperfect peace between FedCom and the Drac-FWL not really alliance.

Which would have ended conflict for a long time.

Somewhere in there came the 2750 Tech Readout that made for some historical reference as tech was rediscovered, though most 2750 mechs sucked.  So many of them were like first drafts of okay ideas.

Writers put themselves in a corner after 3039, though.

Enter clans, radical change, cool stuff like the Chaos March - and despite disliking the clans, the Chaos March was awesome.

Amaris Triumphant as a couple books for an alternate setting would be cool.

Grimdark for tech is just dumb.  Lori Kalmar realizing she'd be burned to death by an inferno launcher in Decision at Thunder Rift is fucking dark.  Her friends all being spaced and she being forced to be a pirate minion is fucking dark.  Don't need weird space mutants to make Battletech dark.

Kentares IV is fucking dark.  Jinjiro Kurita saying "Kill them all" and executing the commander who said "what exactly do you mean?" is fucking dark.

Gene spliced lizzad people is just silly.

Sarna has backed up it's wiki circa 2020-07, they have started pulling rules and etc out, it's likely wise to grab the archive.

https://www.sarna.net/files/download/data/sarna_cache/sarna_en_all_2020-07.zim

The way you use this is with a zim reader.

https://github.com/kiwix/kiwix-desktop

Is one such. Look on the right for releases to find the downloads.

You'll open it up and poke around till you find the way and load in the sarna wiki, and wham, you have the entire wiki on your computer / phone / tablet.

Make backups of the zim file. Sarna has long shown the signs of going rotted in the head.

As a personal initiative to support the trans community within the BattleTech fandom I reached out to some of the incredible people who make BattleTech what it is. From the writers who create our favourite stories, to the voice actors who brought characters we love to life.

This is the updated version of this to include a few changes and an additional voice to the community

Thank you to these incredible voices that rose up in support, who were not afraid to speak up on behalf of some of the most vulnerable in our society. Because trans rights, are human rights.

BattleTech is for Everyone

And if you don't agree with the anarchy, you're not human. Why not? Well battletech is for everyone, but you're not allowed in, so you must not be human!

The dumb. It burns.

No, people. BT is not for everyone.

It's for people who like it. It's certainly not for people who don't like it, or who do, but also use it as a vehicle to push destructive ideas - like this crew.

It's so good that you can keep this nonsense out of your games and off your tables in spite of the brainrot.

That space between the Magistracy and Concordat is called the New Colony Reaches.

There ain't no Trans Aurig-Onanist Conspiracy ruled by the Arana family and their clan of dickchopping forearm-skinners.

That's the land of the Taurian Marshals.

If I accidentally stumble on the bitcoins lost in the MTGOX collapse, I'm buying Battletech and making the isolationist desert survivalist militia as a nation-state of the Taurian Concordat and their slutty but violent whore-with-a-heart-of-gold Magistracy of Canopus both back into the grand but flawed places they were.

The Aubrey Hale approach to politics.

When they get in close and have to flip the PPC field inhibitors off, there's a 43% chance of self destruction.

Ah, one joke.

If by some miracle I stumbled into billionaire status, id love to buy the Battletech IP.  Start by de-cannonizing everything after the end of the FedCom Civil War, then release a guidebook titled "The Battlemasters Guide" that breaks down every 5 years starting in 3020 and identifies the core characteristics (technologies, faction dynamics, conflicts, etc) of each of those year groupings to make it easy to run games (whether it be the Battletech board game or the Mechwarrior RPG) in whatever year group you want.  Any new novels would have to ensure they did not retcon or infringe upon established lore.  Then, start releasing individual (so you aren't forced to buy boxed sets just to get 1-2 you like) plastic minis for every mech/vehicle/fighter with the sprues for each variant included.

As much as it sounds like backward thinking, I suspect it would do a lot to revitalize the IP.

I'm going back before then.

Fedcom civil war was stupid.

It was the product of writing themselves into a corner.  Melissa Steiner effectively killed offscreen, Katrina apparently forgotten about (she'd be old but probably still alive by 3050s), some daughter Katherine just whipped up into archvillain out of nowhere.

Could've written in some Isle of Skye feeling overlooked after a Marik incursion where the Marik has to start a war to unify their own people, resulting in Sky feeling left out and throwing a wrench into the works of the trade corridor between the Suns and the Commonwealth.  Weakens the two but doesn't get stupid.

But no, it was just "they'll fight because of course the two houses that arguably have the most in common will fight".

Also let's take a footnote with every house and make them all caricatures of stupid.  Steiner big mechs big guns incompetent Davion big hero autocannon all the things Kurita japan japan japan Liao (offensive Rosie O'Donnell talk here) Marik house civil war oh and they do economics now.  It was the lamest of memes given form.  This is the same era as the Jarnfolk nation of spacefaring norse assassins because???

That idiocy aside, there's also the problem with the Marik-Steiner border.  Aside from conventional greed and expansionism, they aren't really that hostile.  Liao is full of assholes, Kurita is bigger assholes, and Davion has asshole neighbors, leading to them acting more like assholes - the only reason Davion would really fight with the Concordat.

I might go back to the third succession war and do something similar.  Also change the format from the insanely dense books that are almost a pain to read due to trendy fonts and stupid backgrounds and go back to 90s era books.

Also offer modules online, with mechs for given scenarios as printable models for 3d printing folks.  Maybe charge a buck a mech or something, with a breakdown on what designing them costs and give an idea of why it's good to pay for it a bit.

Also Far Country is canon.

So the tariffs are really starting to bite CGL and loren coleman just posted a complaint.

Unline mage and the crew ... I have a somewhat different take.

Click To View SpoilerSo, quick backstory: coleman some years back"screwed up" (sideyestare) business and personal finances and the big chunk of change (six figures, I think) reportedly went to work on his house.  A saint he ain't.
Anyways. He's right in saying that a tariff is a tax on your own people.

Yes, you're trying to get them to stop buying something from someone else to make that someone else hurt, and you're doing it by taxing your own people. This is a given.

He explains the hard place they're in as a gaming / tt company. Yes, we know this too. We even understand why production got to be so much more expensive in the U.S. than it was elsewhere - and I think most of us want that stuff to be undone.

NO pushback there.

That said, let's get explicitly political: I'll be a monkey's uncle if LC isn't a democrat voter and hasn't been one his whole life. I've not been interested enough to check and am basing this guess off his behavior and where he lives. The democrats have been far worse on this stuff and are pushing junk like stakeholder capitalism (AFAIK, that idea was codified in germany to try and make companies more "socially responsible" in ... *cough* ... 1934 *cough.* ThatsWhatYouCallAClue.

The republicans are just about as useless on this as a one legged man at a butt kicking contest. The democrats are actively worse about driving up production costs.

-----------------

This, LC, is why you don't toss productive core people out on their ear because you and others around the office are butthurt about their politics and possibly their personality. Especially not when you do that and accept work from their violent stalkers who have a criminal history of - I believe it was terroristic threats? Who lied to you about their identity.  All the while greatly mishandling the complaints at you for ... acting exactly like people expect leftist democrats to act.

You don't invite sickos to work for you who openly antagonize your core fanbase.

You don't get upset that the overwhelming majority of your customers and fans are male (what are you, a dumb sexist? )

You don't hire community managers for an IP they don't know ("those are the dragon people, right?") who then *lie* in public about whether or not they're taking over *fan websites* and inviting ... mods and etc from a similar website that's named sig-marxism. Don't be a wimp and get mad at pushback on your politics when your company explicitly gets into that.

What you don't do is  you don't push false destructive sexual anarchy politics *as a wargaming tabletop company.*  You don't keep demo team members who openly talk about going armed to defend their people in game stores and the like - you know good and well that's NOT NORMAL behavior for those venues.

You also let people who work for you and have worked on the setting for a long time go off on social media and say dumb stuff that you know is false and will harm your IP. I'm not talking about that sicko who supports transing his children bryan young, either. We expect that from him. Any parent that would abuse their kids that way is expected to be a raging mess.

Now for the man up bit: you knew you were going to have to choose one side or the other to piss off. Instead of trying to avoid it when that finally came around ... you chose to ...

Piss off the larger part of the fanbase. What good is your building in buffers for unexpected expenses when you do such a bad job at this part of running the company?

If you had picked the larger number of fans - who btw, in spite of their obnoxiousness are further towards the less destructive side regarding sexual anarchist politics - you and CGL would have some good will built up and you could lessen output, go to pdfs, and output more story and online content to get through.

Instead, you chose to run CGL (regarding politics) like an idiot.

You smacked around your core buyers and fanbase.

Now you're going to pay, because the ones you've ticked off won't help you.

-------------------------------

end "we told you so."

CGL and the 'fall' of the Battletech IP novels reminds me of a few discussions (ironically enough, the people pointing this out were female authors and book distributors) I've seen lately talking about how novels aimed at the general young male demographic have mostly evaporated for the last 15yrs.

Holy wall of text.  Should have known years ago this was coming just from the behaviour of Herb Beas that was allowed.  His dislike/hatred for anything remotely to the right wasnt a secret, even to the fanbase.

Bullshit. (Aimed at LC, not you)

Get back to basics and use printed counters.  There are tons of print shops in the US that could do it.

CGL is deleting and banning anyone who disagrees with them.  I hope they all end up homeless.

Is that because young males have stopped reading OR because those people don't write content *for* young males (or males otherwise)?

I tend to suspect the latter, I believe the former is happening, but it's happening across the spectrum.

Oh, I've no doubt the tariffs are hitting them hard, and that is pretty much how they work but .. LC and crew chose to split their fans. LC and crew chose to bring in authors who hate writing combat and who write filth (illsa bick), they chose to try and enforce destructive sexual anarchy on people when they know people, especially *their core audience* don't want that.

Now harder times have come down the pike and they're paying for it. They split their base for destructive stupid reasons and now they're having to hurt harder than they would if they hadn't have done that.

Most discussions I've seen and been part of ended up leaning toward a lack of materials.  Even if it were the former, you will never get a demographic to start back up without the latter.

I liked BT right up to before the Clan invasion. Lost interest after that.

Loved designing 'mechs and vehicles - still do. Don't care for XL engines, double capacity heat sinks but loved the addition of electronic warefare.

Didn't care for the exceptional love the developers gave to House Davion - as if they could do no wrong. I was happy to see the universe evolve - especially the addition of the FFR - until the Clans ended that new novelty.

I have all my old books and will keep them long after they fall apart.

This is one of the neat things about BT.

You don't have to use the stuff you don't like... AND ... if you want setting and lore for the era of stuff you like?  It's probably already there for you to riff off of and play in and around as setting.

Love scavenger campaigns and tech level 1 and don't care for DHS?  Stay out of first starleague and clan invasion. Etc.

Don't like CGL's obnoxious stupidity?  Play with everything else.

Easily done.

That.

There's been a lot of discussion in the last decade especially of the "young adult" market of how it's exclusively leftist-woke and very much not for one of its traditional primary markets.

Books like "Decision at Thunder Rift" probably aren't getting printed anymore.

Though not exclusively aimed at young males, it does match with a lot of interests.

My youngest has started reading all my Battletech novels that I've collected over the years.  I stopped after the Federal Civil War was over except I did grab one book by Stackpole in the dark age era, but after that, I was done.  My kid can be done there as well.

The dark age novels spun right back up to full regiment and batallion on battalion action and intrigue.

As I understand it, they were trying to get back to tech level 1 / scavenger tech era, where a lance of mechs was really meaningful again ... but that toothpaste wouldn't go back into the tube.

Fair warning though. Stay away from books written by illsa j bick in the bt series. IIRC she openly admitted she doesn't like mech combat and she writes pure filth (you can confirm this by reading the reviews on her book that has the bounty hunter character in it).

Yeah, I didn't really do much after whatever book had Victor's death in it.  I did buy the books about the Wolf/Falcon invasion of Earth, but never read them.  I've been trying to read the Expanse novels when I have time.
I still work full time and have three grandkids which is pretty much a part time job.  My oldest is deployed overseas and didn't take his family with him.
