Storyline has been fantastic thus far and I haven't picked up even a whiff of "The Message" yet. I won't be getting it till it hits GOG so you all are my beta testers. From the videos of the gameplay and cutscenes I've seen ... it looks like pgi put in some effort to make it match the setting, but you can see around the edges where they just don't get the clans. Stuff like clanners being emotional over death in ways they wouldn't, the generic kinds of things and the way clanners and sibkin would talk to each other, and how while in clan life they don't like waste, they basically don't treat or see killing people as a waste - rather it's what the person could do, and can we replace them easily or not. Clanner warriors (outside of CGB to some extent) and especially the trashcan born ones do not have a concept of mother-father-children family, AND while romantic and intense love is not wholly unknown to them, it's foriegn enough that they don't know how to handle it and it borderline freaks them out when it happens to them. CSJ wouldn't be too torn up about the orbital bombardment of edo at turtle bay either. Perez and others were involved in making that decision; he was not the only one. CSJ has been placed (for a very long time) as the hardliner "fundamentalist clanners" who make the jade falcons look liberal by comparison. IIRC they basically don't take slaves ("bondsmen") and in the rare cases when they do those slaves effectively never make it up to warrior status. Their warriors are also noted for being pretty ignorant when it comes to reading books or interacting with things that aren't the rememberance or related to their work or clan culture. Oh, and the watch, the clan's intel service arm? IIRC they didn't even have that pre-invasion and even after the watch were looked down on as being dishonorable. If you read the sourcebooks for the life rolls for clan watch characters, they get their faces pushed in by inner sphere assets so badly that it can give them ptsd. |

Life rolls in MW 3rd edition and beyond are lame. It's a whole bunch of lost limbs and bullshit. MW2 is the pinnacle of MW RPG. Simple, direct, almost all 2d6, and waaay less stats to keep track of. Tell a damn story. Back few pages of the Intelligence Operations Handbook showed the Clan spy archetype basically up against a wall with bullet holes erupting from the wall about to be killed because they're so dismally naiive, stupid and useless. I'd find the pic if I could but we live in the era of dead internet. Comstar/Word of Blake had the best spies, and each house had their own specialty. At least they did before idiocy like the WoB jihad transdimensional warp-40K cyborgs and Jarnvolk or whatever started getting written. Writer: "imagine a deep space past the periphery culture that's almost exclusively assassins!!" Editor: "that's fucking stupid, but we need to put out a splatbook to keep the lights on, fuck it" |

Mine was " Heat Miser " like from the old Christmas special . I used to run my Mechs hot w fireing all my weapons and sometimes the guys thought maybe I didnt add my heat points right . Ha . So ... I think I have some idea what he's riffing off of and speculating from, plus I suspect he's read at least some of the novels. On the billion to .0000001% chance ganglo sees this... dude, just drop the link : https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Essay:_BattleMech_Technology#The_Neurohelmet Click To View Spoiler The Outside Limits While the neurohelmet can help translate the MechWarrior's basic intentions to the BattleMech and give a small amount of sensory feedback to the MechWarrior, they aren't capable of real-time "mind reading" that would be necessary in order to directly control a BattleMech's movements or weapons systems—nor can they input enough data to a MechWarrior to replace the cockpit information systems. The first Star League could not make helmets capable of this and neither can the Clans. Also: Overall 'Mech functionality ... It is the BattleMech that does the majority of recoil compensation and compensates for blasts of incoming hostile fire. While a MechWarrior can help the BattleMech keep its balance, for instance, by "telling" the 'Mech when to ride with recoil rather than leaning into it, or when to throw itself off-balance at another 'Mech, it is still the DI that handles most of the decision-making when it comes to balance chores. Moving is yet another task where the BattleMech does most of work. Though a BattleMech may have proportionately large feet, it still must choose every footstep with care in order to compensate for outside forces or in anticipation of environmental features. Again, it is the DI that handles this, via a 'Mech's many sensors. Hand actuators are also tools that the BattleMech will handle via the DI network, especially more modern 'Mechs, which are programmed with very capable and complex actuator routines. BattleMechs will actually move their limbs and torso to avoid collisions. The agile movements of a light BattleMech threading its way through a forest is not only the result of a talented MechWarrior, but the 'Mech's own DI computer avoiding the trees. All of that said, 'Mechs are not built or programmed to be autonomous, mostly because they carry a prodigious amount of firepower and are physically so large. In fact, MechWarriors must handle all of the higher-level decisions, essentially handling "higher level thinking" and balance tasks for their 'Mech. This is why BattleMechs do sometimes simply crash their way through forests, clip buildings, or trip down into ravines. BattleMechs are programmed to obey their pilots, regardless of the "common sense" programmed into the 'Mech. For instance, a 'Mech will swing its arms through the side of a building if that is what's required to bring weapons to bear on a target. BattleMechs will give collision warnings, but they don't override their pilots. Ironically, this is one of the reasons why it takes a long time to train good MechWarriors. MechWarriors actually have to learn how to think for their 'Mech and exploit the machine's "intelligence" in order to get the results they want. And (unless things have changed since the answer given here: https://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php/topic,26178.0.html (backup of said here: https://archive.is/8jSD1 ) The original text sources for that are the controlling source. I mean, aside from the whole "We own it and we'll do what we please." Still, what he posted is a lot closer to right than wrong. Some of the stuff I used to see written about the neurohelmets was really off the wall. ETA: basically, because of the limitations of the interface, you're not going to get robust control from using it. What you get is sort of like giving your intentions to the DI computer and it translates that into function. |

And now, to break up the monotony ... For your laughs and otherwise: https://www.sarna.net/news/your-battletech-news-round-up-for-october-2024/ https://archive.is/QhVVi Your BattleTech News Round-Up For October, 2024 2024/10/31 Welcome! It has been a busy month, from a brand-new MechWarrior game releasing to stellar reviews, to many new official product announcements, to a beloved fan-zine self-destructing. All of this happening while in less than a week an American election could spell the end of the Western world as we know it. That may or may not be hyperbole, but I know many Canadians are feeling anxious about how things are going down there. So let’s all take a deep breath and try to remember that war crimes are for the year 3024, not 2024. And with that, onto your BattleTech news for October.

If you're not a gene-altered freak with no family dumped out of a genetic vat their warriors look down their nose at you. CSJ is known for being that kind of brute and harsh. PGI dropped the ball on that badly. So far it's the part I've seen that sticks out the worst. I haven't bought Clans yet, but I forgot I bought Battletech back in 2018. I installed it and everything but never got around to it and forgot about it. I just started playing it the other night. It was 11pm, next thing I know it's 7am and my son is like hey, take me to school. ![]() I think I'm ready to do the last mission to retake the throne, can I still play afterwards? I haven't really gone out too far. I keep meaning to go towards Terra or Solaris. |

No way you should have a commando providing body coverage to an atlas. Not tall enough!

Minor, but notable: The in game yakking between the characters - clan warriors won't banter about those topics, and they especially wouldn't in combat. Yeah, they're too soft, but I don't expect PGI to comprehend that. I watched like 12 seconds of one of those clips and hearing clanners talk with contractions is the kind of thing that shows they really don't get it. Battletech TV show from the 90s that was aimed at 12 year olds was more true to the game world. |
| If you want some entertainment, go check out CGL's most recent Kickstarter campaign they are trying to do for their Voltron RPG/Board game. Opened at $10k and is only at $90k w/ 6 days remaining. They are getting absolutely WRECKED by people complaining about other campaigns not yet being fulfilled and multiple "this person canceled their pledge" notices. It's a beautiful thing! |

READ THE INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS. If you have trouble with the program, youtube has tons of tutorials from basic to ... sky is the limit, and you can come ask here. At its very base, the game is not complex. Maneuver and fire, track your heat buildup and ammo for ammo using weapons, track your damage. I'd suggest the quick start rules for the first time you run it on tabletop. You want a bunch of D6 dice and get several different colors, it can be handy to put a dice down next to a mech indicating how many hex it has moved and (color coordinated) if it ran, walked, or jumped. If you're complaining about missing all the time, that's normal - and you're not doing it right. The basic game gives you a number you have to roll on two six sided dice in order to hit your overall target. Just my 2c, and the situation will change what's viable and what's not, but shots requiring more than 6 are hard shots. Shots on 7s can happen. 8s and up are hail-marys. @CreativeBall |

Also, for your first few outings, esp for the kids if they are younger, give them 2 medium mechs each, no more. Only two, because the game moves slowly, esp when you are learning. Not just one, because in BT a good dice roll on a hit against a fresh mech can take it out quickly, and that can be disappointing to a new player. Once you are comfortable running the game, there are all sorts of tricks to make it run faster and smoother. Be aware, BT is very much a "there IS a rule for that" game. It has been adding that sort of thing since the 1980s. Do not slavishly adhere to everything, don't sweat which faction or what era to play the game in. I *would* reccomend you start with the easier tech levels. This corresponds to (very generically! mucho exceptions, etc.) 3025. You will also likely see things indicating starter or introductory level rules. If you add a boatload of advanced rules, the game can get hideously complex. Just learn to get the the foundational game down and enjoy it first. MEGAMEK: you proobably need to read this page if it's your first time installing and/or running it. |

I have played MegaMek and run a few campaigns with it. I wish that the Battletech video game was like it. I enjoyed the micromanaging part of getting enough parts to run my company! Attached File We are putting out two companies to square off for the first match. I've got 7 kids participating, and I'm looking to run the opforce, at least until they get the hang of it. I'm scaling it to 1.5" to make cutting the supports out easier. I have a few more hills to print and then a small town next. Thank for for the advice - I was thinking 3030ish IS tech only if only for ease of play and balance. I'll let you know how it goes |

I'll let you know how it goes What Paulie said, but id also add.... if you have multiple different kids you will need to run herd a bit to keep them from having long stretches of doing nothing (IE: bored kids). If the kids just want to do a bunch of 1v1s, then that shouldn't be an issue. If the kids like to use good tactics (especially if there is a miss-balance on which side uses tactics), then you run a ton of risk of some kids spending most of the game sitting around watching other kids have fun. Regardless, good luck and have fun. |

I enjoyed the micromanaging part of getting enough parts to run my company! https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/553184/1000003291_jpg-3414557.JPG We are putting out two companies to square off for the first match. I'll let you know how it goes Definitely give us the after action report. If you want to run it as a minatures game and not on the hex rules, grab the minis rules on the bg.bt link. |

If the kids like to use good tactics (especially if there is a miss-balance on which side uses tactics), then you run a ton of risk of some kids spending most of the game sitting around watching other kids have fun. Regardless, good luck and have fun. Originally Posted By darkpaladin1: Originally Posted By CreativeBall: I have played MegaMek and run a few campaigns with it. Or alternative get a 20 space clear fishing takle box, number each space, fill it with dice, and make an LRM box roller of DOOOOOOMMMM.

LB-X ACs are going to eat the clock. An average hit with a 10 is going to be 6 1-point hit locations, a 20 is going to be 12 1 point hit locations. But if you want to replicate the experience of filling out Scantron test sheets in school, LB X ACs are the way. |

Also, I'm not quite sure exactly what goal you'd have in mind for that, so I don't have much past that. Some years back I know cgl or such released some really useful GM screens with all your charts and stuff for free on the net, but those have long since dissappeared. |

Or be me, be the dummy that walks right up to a hardened bunker and find out your friend deploed all his heavy SRM2 equipped BA's in there and they saturate your hit table and shake your pilot into a pink mist. ![]() |

Salamander making good hits could easily be 36 2 point rolls. I really miss tandem charge warheads making elementals obsolete. |
