Alistair Reynolds - Sundiver Series (Uplift).  Sundiver isn't great but the later ones are awesome.

Durr, it's Brin for Sundiver. Reynolds wrote Pushing Ice and the Revelation Space series.

I loved the concept as well!  A newer author I enjoy is Dennis E. Taylor and the Bobiverse series.   I also enjoy Craig Alanson...not a serious series at all, but it’s fun.

Edward W. Robertson has a great, long-spanning series about alien invasion driven apocalypse. If you like Hugh Howey, you might enjoy this.
