Posted up the safe queen on the main knife thread. Trying to give it some love. I carried it for the last 2 weeks, traveling this weekend.  I've turned in to a multi-knife carring crazy person I guess. https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/160658/20211119_151114_jpg-2174863.JPG

How did you carry it?

Or did you just carry it in a suitcase and pull it out at hotels?

I suppose it could be a fun revisit to the tanto/kwaiken thing I made out of the planer blade a while back.

I'll think on it.

I'm torn. If it was a bit taller I'd be thinking about a petty chef or something of the like. I had impure thoughts about trying to forge bevels into it to see if I could get it out to ~1.5-1.75" at the heel but I have basically no experience forging so I'd probably just ruin it. Lol

A dagger could be fun too.

It was an impulse buy and I didn't really have any ideas in mind.   I'm not in a huge hurry. I'm sure the right project will come along.

I snagged a picture of these two at my in-laws today. The one on the bottom was from the first batch of these that I made as gifts for last Christmas. The top one is from the last batch of them that I made.

It's pretty cool to see the difference in the work from a year ago.

I'm getting things moving a little on something a little bit different than the knives I have been working on.

The owner of the all black harpoon point that I made a while ago contacted me and asked if I could make something like an XL version of the one he had. That one has a 3.5" blade from 3/32" 1084.  This one is a 4.5" blade and will be from 3/16" 80CrV2.

I'm thinking about calling it the "angry utility knife" because he wanted something that he could use in a self defense role (should the need arise) and be useful around a construction site.  I don't pretend to know anything about knife fighting, but most of the designs I could come up with involved a point that I felt wouldn't stand up to construction tasks.(dude actually mentioned digging wood out from around the head of a nail to be able to grab it). I think this design will be a decent balance of tip strength and stabbyness.

Any ideas on changes?

Not going to hurt me feelings if you post up some pictures.  It's your art after all.

Getting started on this one.  I think I'm going to do some grinding pre HT.  I don't usually do that but I don't normally work with 3/16" stock.

Attachment Attached File

It's going to have a recurve but I'm going to grind it in  and blend the primary grind after the top of the grind is where I want it.  Between that and the swedge/harpoon point I'm going to have to do some learning on this one to get things how I want them.

Pre HT grind done. I took the edge down to about 5/64"and stopped the plunge and top of the grind about 1/4" short of where I want them to end up.

"brodbeck ironworks"

I got some work done on this one today.

Took it to .007" on the edge and a 220 grit belt finish. I still need to round the spine and inside the heel of the blade, then hand sand.

It's made from 1/8" 80CrV2. It's .106" at it's thickest point now. It's an 8" blade with a 1.75" heel.

I've been meaning to make myself a knife to use at work for quite a while. This leftover chunk of 3/16" 80CrV2 was too tempting. 3" blade, 3½" handle. I've got it set up to be a naked tang but I can do removable scales if I hate it.  It's about 75% ground pre HT.   It's hollow ground and I'll grind it pretty thin, .010" on the edge at the thickest.

I got these two heat treated this weekend.

Today I had some time to get some grinding done.
Attachment Attached File

The bevels are basically done on the harpoon point. I still need to get the swedge grinds done though.

On my warncliffe I still need to cut the plunge grinds in and decide how I'm going to finish the flats(the whole knife besides the bevels.)

I also finished grinding on this guy. I'm definitely liking the taller heel on this one (2"). I took the edge to about .004". I did leave the tip at .008"  because I wanted to make sure it had some support so it wasn't too floppy. Time to hand sand this one.
