| I saw this Seiko Kinetic on Massdrop and I like the looks. I can't find these models anywhere else to compare and see if the drop is really a deal. Anyone else know much about these models: SKA 721, SKA 723, SKA 725, and SKA 727? What about the Kinetic movement? Seems like an electronic mashup of an automatic and a quartz watch movement. |

The link in the OP, took me straight to the massdrop home page, so I could not look at that specific watch. As far as the Kinetic movement in the Seike goes. It is very, very, very good to go!!! And yes it is kind of liked you " electronic mashup of an automatic and a quartz watch movement." |

A. I like my Seiko kinetics. B. Massdrop usually has pretty good prices, less than ebay and Amazon. The ska725 is on Amazon for $178. You do have to wait for the deal to close, and then for massdrop to receive and reship the watches. A little patience is required. C. This deal is limited to 98 pieces. I've been closed out of deals before when they hit their order limit (once while I was ordering D. If you like it buy it. Seiko also has similar looking watches with an automatic movement (SNZG09K1) for $98 on Amazon, if you would rather spend less. |

I messed around with one of the newer Seiko SUN019 "Kinetic GMT divers" for a bit. This is with the 5M85 kinetic movement. Purchased mostly because I was still too finicky about shooting with my mechanical watches at the time. Some observations-
1) Based on how long I haven't been wearing it, and how much charge it still has (via the power reserve indicator), I can confidently say mine would definitely go the advertised 6 months without wearing, and still hold charge. I've seen debates online where people claim they were having difficulties keeping their kinetics charged, while in a rotation with other watches. This was not my experience at all. I could wear mine ONE day a week, and it would perpetually stay at full charge. I'm pretty active, and wore it while working out, running, shooting etc, so YMMV. 2) The rotor on mine was NOISY. This could be a pro or a con, depending on your perspective, but I thought it was sort of a neat, quirky quality. I know most watch guys don't like rotor noise on their mechanical automatics, but I found myself liking the "swish, swish, swish" sound when I was in a really quiet room. 3) Something happened to my movement about 6 weeks in, which prevented setting of the hour hand in the usual 'jump hour' fashion. Something was stripped or broken, causing the hour hand to only move in the counter-clockwise direction when being set. This made date resetting after 30-day months a pain in the dick. 4) I haven't even attempted to get warranty repair on it yet, because I quickly lost interest in it. Though I liked the overall aesthetics, the SUN019 was just too big and retarded looking at 48mm. |
