I'm looking at getting a new watch and was looking at some of the automatic watchs and was wondering about this particular watch.  I was wondering if this would be a good watch to get into automatics? Does anybody happen to own it and if so what are your thoughts about it? Good beater watch, nice size, or just look at something else? I'm tired of replacing batteries that don't seem to last as long anymore. Any advice would be great and I'm not looking to spend much money since it's right at Christmas time and most of my funds have went to the kids already. Thanks again Rick

They're a heck of a buy for the money if you're not going to swim with it.

I guess the only thing that is holding me back is the size of the watch. I'm afraid it might be a little to small for my liking. I really like the vintage military style of the watch.

It's a little on the small side compared to a lot of what's popular, but it's not abnormally small for a men's watch.

That's a good looking watch!

If you're concerned about the size, Citizen has a similarly styled watch with a 45mm case that I've been eying.  It's solar powered, so batteries aren't an issue.

I really really like that watch. Dang I wish you hadn't shown it to me. I might have to pry a little extra money out of my wallet, but there is just something about the automatic and the clear back showing all the movement that is really cool.

Those Seikos are great watches for the price. You'll get more than $50 out of it, I'm sure. The size of those watches are great, to me, as no real military style watch would be as big as these 45mm bezeled watches you see all over (historically, at least -- outside of when they wore pocket watches in bands).

If you want something along a military vintage look, there's the Hamilton Khaki Field ref. H69419363 which comes it at a respectable 38mm.

It's actually a manual wind, not automatic, using an ETA 2804-2, but it's a solid 4Hz movement.

If you really want to go with a larger watch with the same simplistic look, definitely look at Weiss.

Made in Los Angeles, it's a 42mm watch with a manual wind (not auto) base Swiss ETA 6497 movement. I am holding off buying one because I wanted a 40mm and he's only making 42mm. Not to mention he's still working on his own movement to make a fully American made watch.

Sorry, man.

The mechanical watches definitely have an appeal to them, especially with a display case back like the Seiko.

OP's looking at $50 watches.  I think $950 is a bit on the high side.

I like a smaller to medium size watch definitely don't want a huge watch, I'm use to wearing fossil watches and that's it never tried anything else. So I might really like the smaller size. I love the Hamilton watches and the Weiss watches are very sharp, but both as of now are out of my price range maybe down the road I would like to step up to something like that. I think I will just go with the Seiko I listed up top and maybe buy a nice leather band to go with it. I love watches, guns, and shoes way to much for my budget.

Do any of ya'll happen to know any good sites to look at for different watch bands?

I put seiko 5s on my two 10 year old kids. They both lasted a year. So yeah.

The carnage was breathtaking. But one is still running fine, despite looking like it was in a rock crusher.

Well thanks for the help guys I went ahead and picked up the green Seiko 5 auto watch. I figured for 55 bucks I would give it a try. I think I'm going to start saving up for the Tudor Ranger watch. Thanks again.

The only downside to a Seiko like that is you can't wind them. You have to shake it a bit and get the auto going. It gets to be a pain if it's not a daily wear. Other than that, they are great. Careful with Tudors, they can be expensive to overhaul.

Ha, I damn near bought that watch in khaki last night. Been Jonsing for a new watch lately and the Seiko 5 fits the bill like a glove. Helps that it's only $50 too!

I got mine in on the 24th and so far it's been great. It has kept time very well for the very short time I've had it. No regrets at all, the watch has no imperfections from what I can tell being a watch novice. For the 55 bucks that I spent I am very satisfied. I might not jump straight to a Tudor ranger, maybe a Hamilton khaki next.

Very cool watch! I have a Hamilton and I think I'm going to have to pick up that Seiko too.

My Hamilton next to my grandfathers issue Hamilton from WWII.

I did buy it in khaki. I've been wearing it for a month now and it's been running to within 10 seconds a week. For $48.00 shipped to the door I figured I couldn't go wrong even if it is the made in Malaysia Seiko. I ordered another one that's stainless with a black dial and a steel bracelet for $48.00 after the holidays and like it too.

This thread got me. I just bought the black face version. Should be here next week. Couldn't resist.
