So I finally got around to brewing my Hef extract on Friday night.. Followed the directions from LHBS
exactly. Pitched my yeast (vial of Hef yeast) @ 70* then kept it at a nice 70-73*. I had some light bubbles in the airlock at first but nothing since... I guess I should just wait the 2 weeks and see what happens? Any suggestions? Oh and the wife broke my hydrometer before I could use it so I'm flying blind there. |
| You should ferment colder than that if you can. Also make sure to pitch an appropriate amount of yeast: Mr. Malty |

I shook it up a little last night and it smelled awesome! Any ideas of what gravity I should be looking for? The kit was from a local brew shop and he didnt give me a number... Thanks again for all of the help... |

I'd think a warmer temp (~70) would be desirable to bring out clove phenols (a yeast derived character that defines the style). For a strain like wlp300 the recommend temperature range is 68-72. |

Yeah, but the temperature of the wort will be several degrees higher than ambient. |

Gravity was 1.020 (seems a little low).. My local brew store guy suggested I stir it up and add some more yeast.. Should the yeast be going apeshit at this point?
When I popped the top to take the gravity reading I noticed some bubbling on the surface, about a thick half inch of bubbles. Should I expect more activity than this? Oh, as I mentioned earlier, it smelled awesome... Thanks again for the tips.. |
