I garage picked a ancient cast iron skillet for about a fart in the wind. Only problem is that I have never RE-cured a cast pan. This one has some rust and stickiness to it. Before I take a wire brush and fubar it please chime in. I already tried some mild soap and scrub pad it's pretty rough. Thanks.

I ground one down using a disc on a drill. Then did a little hand work and then re-seasoned it. It turned out great. Probably even better than the original factory surface. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again and actually have plans for some of my pans once I get time and inclination.

Next time youre grilling stick the pan in the cooling coals after youre through and it'll burn off the old seasoning. Don't put it in when its too hot, or you can crack it... I'm speaking from experience.
I used the self cleaning oven thing, it worked, but smoke was billowing out of the house for two hours after I set up fans at the doors and windows. The pan I cleaned was seriously coated in crap, though. |
